When to Buy an Apple Product

I put a time limit on my business computers.  2 years on a laptop and 3 years on a desktop.  Occasionally I’ll even sacrifice them earlier in favor of a beefier upgrade.  My Dell laptop, having made the last 22 months triumphantly, is getting ready for an upgrade.  One option I’m considering is an Apple Mac Book.

A little bit of searching on the web landed me on MacRumors’ Buyer’s Guide.  The folks who concentrate on spreading all things mac gossip, collect all their knowledge into one guide for an educated estimate on whether you should buy or wait on a new Apple product.

All merchandise is put into one of three categories: Buy only if you need it, Neutral, or Buy.  Products recently released get a buy recommendation, products mid life cycle get a neutral, and products nearing extinction get the only if you need it tag.

Before you visit the Apple store, give it a read here.

    Dammnit Jobs.

I just hope the rumors of the even smaller new mac mini (sans internal optical drive.. ouch!) arn’t true.

I’m all about improved chipset, not so much about needing to drop a couple more hundred to burn CDs & DVDs..

Here’s some real world experience for you from a guy who earns his paycheck thanks to microsoft products:

I made the switch from 12 years of winders machines to a new MacBookPro in february. It’s the best machine I’ve ever owned. And I say that as both the aforementioned windows admin and as a guy who grew up with Commodore Amigas, which I still own and which still work.

I have a few old Mac towers now as well - machines which are pushing far south of 5 years old… they are both running on OSX and both still working perfectly.

The Apple products are more expsensive, but they hold their value for so long, it’s worth every penny. Even if you buy last year’s model, you’ll get a machine that does the job for years to come.

I’ve had my mac for 5 years. It’s finally time to get a new one due to a blown power supply and my “need” to edit on a big better faster machine…whereas my HP laptop only lasted 2-3 years.
