With food, Argentina is known for one thing, its beef.  Cattle raised on the open pastures, grass fed, and hormone free produces what I’m told is some of the best beef in the world.  I traveled nervously with a case of cliff bars prepared for the untimely chance I may find myself surrounded by nothing but carnivorous dining options.  Today’s Buenos Aires however has recently seen a growing vegetarian population.

The center of this cultural movement is Union Vegeteriana Argentina.  This 7 year old organization promotes vegetarianism through donations, public events, publishing books, and a website rich with thousands of pages.  The most valuable for me was the listing of vegetarian restaurants.  I found one only three blocks from my apartment that served a rotating daily menu of 3 options.  A welcome alternative from the quickly tiresome argentine pizza and pasta.

My wife and I ate at both Bio and Krishna while in BsAs in October and had phenomenal meals. Bio in particular was a welcome oasis for a couple of vegetarians who’d been wandering around Brazil and Argentina for a month before landing in Palermo.

I had steak at an Argentina style restraunt for my first time ever in Belgium this year. I don’t recall the cut that was served however it was comparable to my favorite steakhouse, The Keg. I think being a vegan would be one of the toughest challenges and most unrewarding challenges for me to ever face. The most evil Jedi in the universe couldn’t get me to go to the dark side.
