After many requests a new book has been chosen for the Urban Monarch Book Club. I bring to you, The King of Methlehem: A Novel by Mark Lindquist. Pick it up by Wed Aug 29 because that’s when the first reading assignment will be issued.

Instead of telling you what the boring magazine and newspaper reviewers thought of it, I’m going to highlight a few blog reviews.

I was prepared to dislike Mark Lindquist’s THE KING OF METHLEHEM for three reasons: 1) It’s all about the meth drug culture, 2) it’s set in the Pacific Northwest and I’m picky about details when it comes to where I live, and 3) it’s written entirely in the present tense, which seems unnecessarily distracting.

But then, after just a few pages, the entire book opened up and I instantly succumbed to Lindquist’s spare – and funny – writing style.

“The King of Methelem,” a new novel by Mark Lindquist, gives rare and authentic insight into the world of meth addicts, meth cooks and the “tweekers” who loosely circle in their addictive orbit.

Yikes, I had no idea that drugs were such a huge problem in the state of Washington, Tacoma in particular. Although I knew something was up from all those Ann Rule books I’ve read. Mark Lindquist takes us into the world of methamphetamines providing details that only an insider would know. I think I now know precisely how to make drugs in my very own kitchen although I’ll pass on that recipe.
