u23d movie review
February 29, 2008 by Cash
Several years ago, during the first leg of their “Vertigo” tour, I saw U2 at the Pepsi Center. Well, ’saw’ isn’t exactly the right word. Through an entirely unfunny ‘comedy of errors’ getting our $85 tickets, we ended up sitting behind the stage.
Waaay behind.
As in, behind the stage AND behind a two story stack of speakers/screens/equipment that completely obstructed our view of the entire show. We tried to drown our sorrows in $7 frozen margaritas, but coming from past experiences being up close and personal with Bono and the boys (I was 3rd row center @ PopMart, as one example), it sucked.
Thank goodness then for U23D; the next best thing to being in the front row and at $12.25, approximately 92% cheaper too.
U23D is a collaboration between National Geographic and the band. It was filmed in Buenos Aries over a two night stop there in 2006. Using the latest digital 3d technology, it is truly an immersive experience. Wearing the gray-toned glasses pulls you right into the action, with varying points of view from onstage, to a dozen rows or so back.
The set list is mercifully short on their later, lesser works (only two tracks from the dreadful “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb” I believe). Instead, they smartly choose to highlight the hits; from an electrifying performance of “Beautiful Day” to the tear jerking finale of “With or Without You”.
The 3D effects are surreal, and aside from a couple of moments where Bono just can’t help himself reaching ‘into’ the camera at you, it’s easy to forget you’re watching a movie.
Totally recommended, and obviously, seeing it in the theatre with the glasses is a must.

Actually there were four songs from “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb”.
Vertigo
Sometimes You Can’t Make it on Your Own
Love and Peace or Else
Yawheh (played during the credits)
You’re absolutely right rihannsu! Thanks for the correction.
Glad to read you’re not one of the 5% of critics that didn’t like it
I totally had a “behind the stage/ obstructed view” seat the first time I saw them too, lol. I’m very jealous of your “Pop” experience! The best live dvd IMO
I loved this film. Great old tunes, fantastic audience shots and the only thing better than a 50ft Edge is a 50ft Larry Mullen Jr!
“Wipe the tears from your eyes” … a cheesy 3D moment yet very forgivable
I laughed.
It was great to see Larry get the spotlight on ‘Love and Peace or else’! What a great experience it was to see Larry’s kit and how he played each song. I’m glad they put ‘Miss Sarajevo’ in the mix.
