The Power of 48 Minutes
18Sep06

John Richardson has a post about the power of 48 minutes in defeating procrastination.
To summarize: set a timer for 48 minutes. Close out all distractions and work continuously until the timer goes off. Then take a break for 12 minutes to stretch, get a snack, or check email. Repeat.
It may sound simplistic, but read the full post for reasoning on why this might work for you.

Did you use it to write this post?
this is a great idea Glenn.. I look forward to trying it.
I have heard that attention span has a dropoff around 45 minutes and this is why high school classes were set at 55 minutes. 5 minutes at the start to get ready, 5 minutes at the end to packup and 45 minutes to teach.
Amazing. I just tried this for the first time, using my simple cell phone timer. In the course of two ’sessions’ I was able to get an entire week’s worth of posts done for my personal blog.
I felt like I was racing against the clock, which completely kept me focused and prevented the usual slippage into surfing, etc.
Thanks for the incredibly helpful post Glenn. No wonder you’re so successful.
