the curtis hotel review - denver

Sometimes, inconvenience is the mother of indulgence.  This was certainly the case over the past two nights, when renovations at Casa de Cash (stained concrete floors- oh yeah!) had me seeking refuge in a downtown hotel.  After carefully reviewing my options, I decided on the retro-tastic hospitality of The Curtis.

I’m so glad I did.

The Curtis hotel is definitely focused on the ‘fun’, a fact easily gleaned by looking at the 16 themed floors on offer.  From “One Hit Wonders” on 5 to “Chick Flick” 11, they cover a wide variety of strange bases.  The theme extends through the common area of each floor, and typically focuses on movie/tv memorabilia and some kitchy-kewl artwork to set the mood.

I lucked out by landing on the floor I was most interested in; 8:”Sci-Fi”.  Star Wars, X-files and some awesome b-movie stuff from the 60’s (Attack of the 50 ft woman anyone?) adorned the walls of the hallway.

Happily, the theme did not extend to the beautifully appointed room.  Inside, I found incredibly comfortable beds with downfilled comforters.  A flat panel 25″ TV, in room stereo (thankfully, with a hook up for your mp3 player) by Sharper Image, cherry wood armoire and a bathroom fit for a king (complete with marble counters and granite tiled floors) rounded out the space.

Decor was retro-mod, with brushed chrome frames and lighting fixtures, muted, soothing green walls and a decidedly modern vibe all around.

Check in was quick and friendly, each morning a Denver Post was provided, and room service from The Corner Office (still one of my favorite places in town, despite the recent issues with crowding and somewhat lacking service) - including their martinis, was near-perfect.

Each room offered wi-fi as well as a wireless keyboard to surf the net on the tv (for a small fee).  A quick walk to the 2nd floor business center allowed you to check email and the like for free.

The first night I hosted an intimate cocktail mixer heavy on the Bombay Sapphire and amusing conversation.  The super high-end task chair at the desk (which would likely please the furniture dork in anyone) and another plush chair beside the bed made even the standard room suitable for entertaining.  The next night, a date whose company I quite enjoyed also gave the room and its amenities rave reviews.

Midweek prices off Hotels.com averaged $179, I’m sure weekends and holidays are higher.

I’d definitely recommend the Curtis to anyone seeking a well located, cool hotel in the heart of Denver.
