the 15 minute wake up call

I used to be a snooze fiend. Again and again I’d hit the pause button on my alarm, sometimes tacking on 45 minutes to my nightly sleep. Two things have rescued me from this unproductive habit; first, a return to using my beloved Axbo Sleep Phase Alarm Clock and second, implementing the “15 minute wake up call”.

The Axbo will set you back (a worth every penny) $300 USD. The 15 minute wake up call on the other hand is something you can start using immediately; for free.

The 15 minute wake up call basically introduces a smoother transition from your sleep to your waking day. Think of hopping out of bed the second your alarm goes off as jumping into a cold swimming pool. It’s possible, but it’s far from comfortable.

The technique is simple:

  • When your alarm sounds, turn it off. No snooze.
  • Keep your eyes open, and start mentally visiting your upcoming day’s agenda
  • Brainstorm worthwhile additions to your day
  • Periodically check your clock so that when 15 minutes have passed, you can get out of bed
  • When the 15 minutes are up, take a moment to first sit up, with your legs hanging over the edge of your bed. Stay here for 30 seconds or so before finally standing and officially starting your day
  • One additional tip; it helps to keep your eyes moving around the room. Staring at a fixed point increases the desire to close your eyes

For some reason, this simple 15 minute, *open eyed* delay between dreamland and my morning coffee is a lot easier to take that jumping up and hitting the ground running.

Man, my new bed sharer hits snooze like 5 times. Annoying! I encourage her to get up just so the alarm stops going off.

I dig it, I’ll have to try the wake up call, as I’m a prolific snoozer.

As for the Axbo, I remember you guys did a test of several sleep monitors. SleepTracker now has a “Pro” version which gives you the option of 60 (versus just 90) minute window and vibration. With those factors considered, do you think you would have still chosen the Axbo?

(I’m in the market and was planning on buying the Sleeptracker but totally forgot about the very stylish Axbo!)

Oh man Jess; the Axbo is just soo pimp. But so’s the pricetag (PS: I was off above, I think i’ve seen it for like $249).

The thing I liked about the original Sleeptracker when I reviewed it (I think Greg’s got it now) was the simplicity.

Truth be told though, once the *initial* set up of the Axbo is done it’s pretty simple on a nightly basis too. The other benefit of the Axbo; rather than wearing a clunky digital watch to bed, you isport a comfy sweatband. Not exactly gonna score points with the ladies, but serves the purpose well.

Be sure to tell whichever one you end up buying that UM sent ya! :-)

Alright, here’s another question then: I’m on a shift schedule, on a different shift every 2-3 weeks.. which one will give me more hassle with roughly 5 different times to wake up?
