suits are back

According to an excellent article in the Taipei Times, suits are making a comeback for the young, hip, 20’s & 30’s set. This probably means you, so listen up.

“Guys in their 20s and 30s aren’t dressing like they’re going to a funeral or a wedding, but using classic elements in new ways,” the editor said. “The moment we’re in is that it’s far more aesthetically pleasing and stylish to wear suits. Men have a renewed appreciation for the finer things and elegance.

There is also a lot of buzz around mixing ‘high’ and ‘low’ fashion, i.e. the suit coat or blazer with jeans look. My favorite piece of the suits are back puzzle? Velvet jackets.

“I think it’s an easy way to be more dressed up. It takes a pair of jeans that would be sloppy on their own about three steps up. And with dressier pants it can go to a cocktail party or club.”

One of the most encouraging facets of this trend is the rise of stylish, low cost suits and accessories. GQ for instance recently featured a list of top suits under $500, including those from Express and Banana Republic.

Don’t forget to check Ebay for great deals on jackets.

One bit of advice, via our own sartorial guru Glenn?  Skip the jeans on Ebay.  In his experience, finding authentic denim in correct sizing can be quite a chore.

I personally think it looks stupid when I’m on one of the later buses (around 10pm) and I see these “ballers” (most in their teens, some early 20s) in their suit jackets, jeans, and sneakers. I think I could get used to a suit jacket and jeans if the latter is super-super nice, but sneakers? It’s like they’re not even trying.

I couldn’t agree more about the sneakers. A decent pair of black leather shoes is essential to pull this look off, in my opinion.

Suits are coming back? Suits never left! Just FYI, any guy can put on a jacket and jeans (and every guy seems to be doing that - such are the lemmings), but the women turn their heads towards a guy in a suit that fits, a clean, well fitted shirt, and a nice tie (doesn’t have to be an Hermes, Ferragamo, etc. but it helps). Of course the shoes should NOT be the dorky square-toed Kenneth Cole (or Cole Haan, or whatever the other ghastly makers are designing and churning out in lemming-style from their factories in the Far East) monstrosities that everyone and their uncle Walter is wearing. If you’re wearing a suit (not a jacket and jeans, which, by the way, does not constitute a suit) your shoes should be leather and bereft of ornamentation other than a tassel or brogueing. “Bicycle-toed” shoes are ugly (How did those shoes get the name “bicycle toe”? I understand where camel-toe comes from, but not in the context of shoes. In any event, if you want the chicks to dig you, wear the suit and appropriate accessories and you’ll be smiling all night and into the morning…
    Cheers,

I personally like the jeans with sport coat look, as long as the jeans are dark and the coat pressed.

I wear an sport jacket with Jeans (no sneakers) for winter and I can tell you that chicks digg it (which is all I care about).
