St Patrick’s Day: Official Holidays

March 13, 2008 by Greg

St Patrick’s Day is Monday and I’m sure the readership of Urban Monarch needs no reminders.  It is unfortunate though that most of us will be spending the earlier parts of the days working.  If you live in one of these countries though it might be a different story.

  • Ireland: National Holiday
  • Northern Ireland: Bank Holiday
  • Republic of Ireland: Public Holiday
  • Montserrat: Public Holiday
  • Canada (only Newfoundland and Labrador): Public Holiday

The rest of us just drink beer without the government’s support.

In Boston it’s “Evactuation Day”, the day the british left boston in the revolutionary war so everyone gets the day off (only in the city proper). Of course, I put it in quotes because it also happens to be St. Patricks days and it’s a city with a huge irish and irish descendant population. How convenient.

For the last few years, I’ve simply been taking the day off as vacation and setting up shop in the local irish pub around 10 am and staying there til 10 pm.

It’s a dirty, laborious effort, but someone has to do it.

I too am taking a vacation day. I fly out tomorrow to Chicago and fly home Tuesday morning to get back to work. Should be an interesting couple of days… Especially when the bars open at 6am. I don’t think this is BFL Cash…

Green beer is ridiculous. don’t act like a newb - drink yourself REAL beer at all times!

Actually St. Patrick’s Day this year is on Saturday the 15th, because the 17th falls on a holy Monday, so the Roman Catholic church changed it for 2008.
