Sno-Balls are Disgusting
March 11, 2008 by Greg

I’ve been eager to try any New Orleans cuisine that fit within my vegetarian diet and I continue to be let down by the local delicacies. Sno-Balls are disgusting. These are essentially what the rest of the country calls snow cones, except in New Orleans they come from shaved ice instead of crushed. The locals take it to the next level with rows of flavors, optional toppings, and I’ve even heard rumors of ice cream in the center.
I had a dual flavored vanilla orchid and almond, which for some reason, the almond half was blue. I then added the common topping of condensed milk. It tasted OK, or great when compared to my recollections of snow cones from my past, but within 30 minutes my stomach was turning from the obvious overload of sugar. This alone from the smallest size, I can’t imagine what the grossly oversized versions do to a person.

Good gawd could that place look any more sketch?! Was it attached to a garage run by a guy named Cooter?
Just north of me, around Baltimore, the sno-ball stands there are also shaved ice and have quite an offering of various syrups, including sugar free.
However, the choice of topping is marshmellow fluff, which I can imagine is WAY better than condensed milk.
Cash, that’s not sketch for New Orleans.
Greg, try the snowball again in the summer and see if you change your mind. Try a citrus flavor without the condensed milk.
I haven’t been their in a few years, but there was a pretty good vegetarian restaurant in the Marigny at one time. The service was terrible, but it was right on Frenchmen near all the bars and such. The prices were pretty good. There was also an indian place/hooka bar where you should be able to get some good vegetarian options, also on Frenchman. I miss New Orleans.
