roku netflix player: the future of home entertainment
May 20, 2008 by Cash
I’ve long believed traditional ‘broadcast’ mediums will eventually go the way of the paper newspaper (which is dying a slow, painful death as we speak). There is simply no better conduit for every type of information than the broadband / dsl connection, and that will only be magnified when direct-to-home-fiber becomes more prevalent.
Bravo then to Roku, longtime producer of super-sexy, incredibily reliable wireless digital audio solutions. They’ve partnered with Netflix to unchain the awesome “Watch It Instantly” service and bring it where it belongs: to your TV
- Over 10,000 movies and TV episodes instantly
- No change in monthly Netflix costs and you continue to get your DVDs by mail
- Easily connects directly to your TV
- Pause, rewind or play anytime - just like a DVD
- Guaranteed to work with your TV
The Netflix player, along with Apple TV and a few other fledgling products herald a revolution of digital, on-demand content.
The non-descript black box is far from Roku’s sexiest product (that award easily goes to this piece of techno eye candy), but @ $99, it will prove the company’s most important. Trust me.

Nice. Roku, send us one!
Agreed!
Cool!! I want one too!! I use Netflix, but my apartment doesn’t have outgoing mail, unless you drop it off at the office and hope the mailman stops there, which he doesn’t always do. I want to make sure my turn-around is as quick as possible, therefore I have to go to a public mailbox to send them back. This would be SO much easier!!!
Caroline, I feel you on the mail box situation, I used to deal with that too when I used Netflix.
One question; have you tried the “Watch it instantly” service? Even without this box, it’s pretty awesome.
