poll: your neighbor’s music
June 18, 2008 by Cash

This morning I had a surreal experience. Prior to my shower, I’d been listening to some Frank Sinatra. Afterwards, I was jamming out to an Ed Banger mix cd a friend made me (a sweet Justice track to be precise).
To my surprise, when I hit the power off button on my amplifier I heard the muted sounds of Steve Aoki’s excellent “Pillowhead” DJ set filtering into my living room from somewhere below. With a huge smile on my face - remembering the incredible time I had at Aoki (and following morning for that matter!) I headed for work.
I was shocked. In past apartments, I’ve been tortured by neighbors into all manner of gangsta rap, strange tribal drumming and even horrible, horrible, country twanging (shudder).
It was just one more reminder how lucky I am to have found my new place.
.
How about you? Especially if you’re living in a ‘multi-family’ dwelling (apartment, condo, townhouse, etc):

I hear nothing!
I should ask YOUR downstairs neighbors to answer the poll.. heh heh heh
This is a fun one from my perspective - not that I generally hear anything my neighbors play, but they sure have had an ear-full of what I (and my DJs) play over the years. I run the radio station out of my basement studio, and we do a lot of outdoor stuff when the weather permits, so these gracious people who got stuck with me living on their street have had to endure studio and concert sound systems at all hours of the day and night pumping out everything from big band to drum-n-bass (bleh). Live industrial bands, barbershop quartets and other oddities.
I’m certainly not a jerk, and I always check with the folks on either side to make sure I’m not disturbing them or causing a problem. To my continued good fortune, both sets of folks are older and down to earth and their reply is - “Oh we’d let you know, but down worry, we were young once too. have fun!”
