poll: opposites attract?

September 17, 2007 by Cash

Under normal circumstances, I find myself going thru a whole ’screening process’ with regards to potential girlfriends.  There is a list of qualifiers I’m looking for, many of which involve sharing similar interests.  Recently though, I’ve fallen under the spell of a girl who is my complete opposite in many ways.  Surprisingly, I find the whole situation irresistable, in part because of that.

What about you?  Are you dating/married to someone very similar to you?  Comment away on your thoughts below.

The two guys I’ve ever completely fallen for have been in ways my complete opposites but at the same time, we’ve been very similar. There’s something about balancing each other out that works for people. I know personally, I’m a very emotional person and sometimes irrational and definitely find solace in people who keep me in check, whether the relationship is platonic or romantic. Some of my best friends are my complete opposites. It just works.

Raquel’s comment about balancing each other out is spot-on. There is something about being with someone who is strong in your weak areas and weak in your strong areas that makes it fulfilling to be with them. In contrast, if you’ve a long list of being similar, it can end up being a little competitive, or where one person dominates all the time. And that treads close to being inherently messed up.

I don’t know that I would want to date someone who is totally similar or totally opposite to me, but having some good balancing qualities is essential.

Agreed, I think what we look for are our complimentary partners not opposites. If we truly looked for opposites we would find ourselves horrendously mismatched. We would pair up loving warm women with cold indifferent men.

We’ve all made lists of who we want to date. However, when we find a partner who doesn’t fulfill these qualifications, but we are still attracted to, what happens is not that we are mystically attracted to our opposite. We are simply realizing that there are other traits that we respond to more than our previously thought out reasons.

Love works like a murakami story, not a romance/comedy.
