Open Forum: I Hate Sports
January 5, 2007 by Cash

Intrepid explorer and normal Open Forum contributor Greg is currently stuck on a snowbound bus headed to Boulder. He’s asked me to pose this week’s question to our always informed, well dressed readers.
His take on sports, which is the general consensus of the entire UM crew is simple: “I Hate Sports”.
What about you?
Any teams, sports, etc you couldn’t live without? Are you glued to the TV all day Sunday? Get those comments started.

I definitely hate sports. Endless hours of repetitive boring television with the mandatory screaming guy sports fan is punishment.
I do have to admit, I do enjoy going to a game, but only one or so a year.
I agree 100%. Sports are fun to play, and can be fun to watch in, say, a stadium, but the last thing I need is to devote that much time in my life to watch what might otherwise be a fun thing when it’s coupled with some overpaid commentator jibber-jabbering the latest nonsense - nevermind the other perversions the industry has worked. There are other expenditures of valuable time that are far more worthwhile.
I like sports. I would think sporting events would be a solid part of urban living. Downtown on gameday is such a great atmosphere, no matter what city or sport… I definitely enjoy basketball and football on TV also.
Ok, here is another thing I dislike about sports that I forgot about. When there is a home game the streets and my favorite bars are crammed with dorks dressed up in jerseys.
Maybe you should move to an urban area with no major sports teams…
“Boo, sports!” is how I feel about the whole thing.
Yes, I’ve seen some really tricky plays, passes, rebounds, crashes, dunks, etc, but the amount of time needed to watch a sport to see the “good stuff” really isn’t worth watching an entire game for it. If I was somewhat interested in any given sport, team or game, I’d just sign up for something that sent me a text message with the final score, and watch a hilights reel at the end of the day.
However, if there’s a sport I would watch regularly (if I could): Aussie Rules Football. It’s like Rugby filled with Awesome and Win. The football is bouncy, they punch it instead of pass it, the field is huge and oddly shaped. I’ve seen it all of once, but I’d watch it more often if I could: http://afl.com.au/
