My Ideal Portable Office
March 5, 2008 by Greg

I’ve been fantasizing about a portable office, but with just a few weeks left in my temporary home, it’s something I’m putting off till my next trip. This is my dream list in order of priority.
Wireless Keyboard

Working at home, I use a full size keyboard and mouse. The smaller built in laptop keyboard and trackpad definitely slow me down and keep my hands in an uncomfortable position. A bluetooth keyboard / mouse combination will keep the hands and wrists happy.
Dell Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard and Mouse - $77
Laptop Stand

A laptop on a lap or desk is good for a short working period, but spending extended periods of time with the neck bent over is uncomfortable. A laptop stand will keep the monitor at an appropriate height for desk work.
Humanscale L2 Notebook Manager - $200
Exercise Ball

A traditional chair is not good for extended periods of sitting. A task chair from Herman Miller, Steelcase, or Human Scale would be my ideal solution. However, packing this to go doesn’t work to well. An exercise ball can be deflated and simultaneously keep my core engaged.
Thera-Band Exercise Balls - $24
External Monitor

Numerous studies have been done about the correlation of screen space and worker productivity. With a 22″ widescreen at home, the 14″ on my laptop leaves little real estate. A flat screen upgrade would bring me there.
Dell 22″ Widescreen Flat Panel - $299
Carry All Case

Everything is small enough to get on a plane, but without proper protection, computer equipment can be easily damaged. Pelican, makes of industrial weather proof casing, make cases specifically to hold a laptop, keyboard, and extra monitor.

Pelican cases also come with pick and pluck foam so you can shape the foam exactly as you need it.
I’d add a JetBoil stove so that you can make Miso and other tasty food
and tea!
