music : wednesdaily download - nyc indie edition
November 22, 2006 by Cash

On occasion, in completely random non-scheduled fits of fancy, I will be turning you on to some great music you may have missed.
First up, some indie goodies from that hive of creative genius, New York City.
Elefant
Elefant is a 4 piece outfit whose dream pop leaning indie rock seems to have influences in minimalist goth and British new wave alike. Expect catchy choruses dripping with brooding vocals, smart lyrics and tight arrangements.
Recommended album : The Black Magic Show

French Kicks
Brooklyn based band French Kicks’ sound is said to be rooted in the hardcore punk scene in the D.C. area where they grew up. However, their current sound seems far more drenched in upbeat Brit-pop than anything else. The Pixies and the Kinks are both referenced as influences, and I can definetly hear a touch of both in their relaxed, rolling guitar work.
Recommended album : Two Thousand

Ivy
Ivy has to be counted amongst my favorite bands of all time, and were another delightful discovery I can thank Radio 1190 for. Their sound is an erotic blend of shoegaze, bliss pop and rock. It’s almost difficult to recommend just one album, as every release seems to be a masterpiece unto itself. Dominique Durand’s coquettish vocals shimmer atop reverb laden guitar-scapes and perculating synths. Think the Smiths plus keyboards and you’ll be close.
