People are always trying to learn my secrets.
How can you drink so much?
How are you still standing?
Why did you just fall down?
Hey, a man needs his mysteries. One question though that seems to come up more than any other is “How do you find all this cool music?”. Although there are many answers to that question, one of the first and foremost is : Radio 1190.
Radio 1190 is the student run radio station at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
It’s been ranked the best station in Colorado for the last several years, with very good reason. Picture a place where you can hear Public Enemy, followed by Bjork, leading into The Smiths and finally some speed metal band from Norway you’ve never heard of, and you’re getting the idea.
I discovered Goldfrapp thanks to 1190, which was a life altering event.
My friends constantly complain about the fidelity of the station over the air (hey, it’s AM) but luckily for everyone reading this, they have an excellent online stream you should check out. Now.
With a schedule of shows ranging from Bollywood (Beats From The East) to underground Hip Hop (Basementalism) and Goth/Industrial (Remission), there’s something for almost every taste, including (Greg, listen up) several jazz offerings.
My favorite time to listen though is during ‘ordinary time’ when the dj’s whim and the constant stream of requests keeps the mix eclectic and fresh.
Much like the saying about Colorado weather “If you don’t like it, wait 5 minutes and it will change”, the same goes for 1190. Give it a 5 song ‘chance’ and you’ll probably find yourself jotting down a new band’s name on a napkin to check out later.
I always do.

I do like your taste of music
Damn you AM
[...] Ivy has to be counted amongst my favorite bands of all time, and were another delightful discovery I can thank Radio 1190 for. Their sound is an erotic blend of shoegaze, bliss pop and rock. It’s almost difficult to recommend just one album, as every release seems to be a masterpiece unto itself. Dominique Durand’s coquettish vocals shimmer atop reverb laden guitar-scapes and perculating synths. Think the Smiths plus keyboards and you’ll be close. [...]
