mstrkrft live review: the church, denver, 3.6.2008

MSTRKRFT live at the Zenith, Paris

I was on the fence about doing an actual review of this show, knowing it would be difficult to capture the experience in words. Yesterday, several beers into a serene Sunday afternoon with my good friend Glenn however, I was convinced to try. So here goes.

Walking into the Church that night, I was immediately overwhelmed by two things. First, the number of people. It was absolutely wall to wall. Second, the energy of the room. Across the sea of dancing revelers there wasn’t a bad vibe in sight. The feeling was so positive in fact, that the only personal point of reference I have for it is the Daft Punk concert at Red Rocks.

The opening DJ, Michael Trundle, is an old favorite of ours. He spins every week at Lipgloss, a local Brit Pop night we used to frequent religiously. On this night though, he was able to fully unleash his electronic collection and get the crowd pumped properly.

Once MSTRKRFT took the stage however, it was pure pandemonium. One pulsating organism of sweaty, happy people moving to the surreal beats. Beneath green sweeping lasers and the explosion of glittering colors coming off the disco ball overhead, we found ourselves worshipping at the house of KRFT.

When I first saw the setup, and realized they wouldn’t be playing ‘live’ but rather DJ’ing, I was a bit apprehensive. All my fears were quickly put to rest however as they threw down the sickest set I’ve ever seen. Plenty of Ed Banger tracks, a couple of their own hits (Easy Love and the brand new “VUVUVU” were highlights) and several Daft Punk classics rounded out an amazing night.

The finale, once the house lights went up, was the theme song from Cheers. You heard me. It made a lot of sense. If MSTRKRFT keeps hosting the kick ass parties we bore witness to that night, it won’t be long before everybody knows their name.

Do whatever it takes to see them if they’re spinning in your town. Trust me.

A++
