mstrkrft - easy love video

December 5, 2007 by Cash

My continuing search for ‘another band like Daft Punk’ (suggestions so far have included Digitalism?! puhLEASE) brought me to Canadian producers / musicians MSTRKRFT.  While they may not be Daft Punk ENOUGH to satisfy my cravings, they’re definitely going in the right direction.

I’ll call your attention then to the freaking bizarre video for their song ‘Easy Love’.

What starts out as a sexy expose of several gorgeous women sensuously sipping long straws quickly descends into a strawberry quik(?) bukkake explosion, replete with dentist’s chair and disco ball.  Naturally.

I’m at a loss for words.  NSFW?  Um, I dunno.

The world needs more disco balls.

I must say, I really do agree with Greg here on the disco balls. I had one in the kitchen during College. And everything was alright then.

This video is lovely. I wish it were playing on the screens here at work more.

There is NO other band like Daft Punk. They are robots and hide their technology well. Digitalism is similar but not the same. Vitalic, Boys Noize, Uberzone are probably as close as you will get. A search on French electro might reveal some intersting things. I get too impatient though maybe you will have more luck?

I’ve just recently discovered Justice. Check out the first track, Genesis, on their newest album.. †.

Aaah Jess, funny you should mention Justice. I was first ‘truly’ exposed to them (via a song other than the already-beyond-on-my-nerves D.A.N.C.E.) AT the daft punk red rocks show. Kavinsky’s sick dj set prior to the pyramid people’s arrival included “Waters of Nazareth” without a doubt one of my favorite songs of the moment. I totally agree Justice could be heir apparent to DP’s throne, but only time, and more songs with cool vocals will tell for sure. Bonus points: good job on the ascii(?) ‘cross’ symbol you dropped in your comment. :-)

Sean, the bands you mention (with the exception of Uberzone- just can’t get into em) are all great in their own right. The missing link though, that makes Daft Punk stand out is the lack of anything remotely ‘dark’ or ‘down’ about their music. It’s just sheer crazy upbeat FUN FUN FUN. Meanwhile, they have that strange gift for escaping (in almost all cases, ‘one more time’ pushes it) any sense of cheesy-kitch.

I guess they’re truly one of a kind. (sigh)

Also, Sean AND Jess; if you haven’t checked out the rest of Ed Banger’s stuff (the record label/collective that works with Daft and similar electro crazies) I’d definitely recommend it. They have some compilations out and such.

Everyone else: the forum is definitely still open for suggested daft subsitutes.

Yeah, I didn’t have any specific song recommendations when someone suggested the album, and had never heard of them before., butI really wasn’t a fan of d.a.n.c.e. I think it was too “fluffy” and not enough of the thick, sweet, soul-shaking basslines in the other tracks.

I considered looking up the ascii code for the cross, but just tried to cut+paste it from the pfm review.. and it worked! I’ll check out the recommendations, and when I get home, see if I can scour through my collection for other DP alternatives.

Why would u search for daft punk clone? Its like looking for pink floyd clone or underworld clone, or anything that was ground breaking too.

Hower, i can suggest other bands that wouldnt exist without DP:
    -My Robot Friend [http://www.myspace.com/myrobotfriend]
    -The Spirals [http://www.somarecords.com/music/darkroom_cd2/]
    -Etienne De Crecy [http://www.myspace.com/etiennedecrecy]
-Felix Da Housecat, modeselektor [both pretty popular, u might hear of them b4 :]

Thats for now :) But the truth is, that electro is rather boring if u listen to it too much :) Well, its like with any other genre on the second thought…

Xezzy, thanks for the commment! I’m not looking for a ‘clone’ exactly, but I’ve become soooo dependant on my Daft Punk live collection (Coachella, Vegoose, Alive) that I fear overdosing and burning out if I don’t soon find an ‘alternative’. :) I’ve never heard of the spirals or etienee de crecy, so I will give them a shot!!!!
