Men’s Magazines Ranking
June 19, 2008 by Greg

Urban Monarch in most senses is a men’s magazine. Albeit homegrown, digital, and personal, but still a men’s magazine. Pretending to be the talented writer I hope to someday be, I regularly read the traditional publications to read what my future-peers are writing. Here are my reviews and ranking.
#1 - Esquire
The Best
With historical pieces written by the likes of Salinger and Hemingway, it’s no wonder most modern word written in this rag is a pleasure to consume. Having editor at large A. J. Jacobs on the team doesn’t hurt much either.
#2 - Details
The Best for Fairer Men
Details is fabulous and isn’t afraid to admit it. Gear and good words for both the metro and homo alike. My favorite writing is consistently found in the dossier section. Occasionally this mag provides me with works of wonder lending me phrases like “fagatronic 2000.”
#3 - GQ
The Best for Someone Else
I don’t really understand this magazine. Though for some reason I’ve been periodically buying it since I was 16. I assume that Christopher Walken’s family in Wedding Crashers would be the type of people that understand it. Perhaps I’ll try reading it sometime while wearing dock siders.

Deffo on Esquire. FHM is often a good read as well.
The new Men’s Vogue has well written articles also.
Well, I think Esquire is aweful. Although they have lots of history, I think lately they have gotten wierd and very “red state.” To me, it seems they are out of touch. I like FHM a lot, but harder to get in the states.
Ultimately, I think the rise of the web is going to destroy the magazines. I dig Asylum and UM

While not a “general” men’s mag, I’m a fan of Men’s Health. Lot’s of solid, practical stuff (unlike most of those other “foofy” magazines listed
).
I’m with Jess on this one. Men’s Health always has something I end up using..
@Brian
Personally, Esquire is a little too Blue State for my taste. If they were red state, I guess they’d be more in touch…
Esquire is a definite.
I also really enjoy reading Best Life. Lots of practical advice for all facets of one’s life, from the most inane to the most important, all of it funny and/or useful.
