Between sushi, bonsai and cosplay, Japan is no stranger to weird innovations that somehow catch on with a worldwide audience.  Hopefully that trend will continue with their take on ‘theme cafes’; the latest sexy export from the land of the rising sun.

The first Maid Cafes that appeared around 1998 deserve credit for jump-starting the boom in Japanese theme cafes. Simply stated, your average maid cafe appears normal from the outside, yet customers are greeted by subservient young women dressed in frilly French maid outfits.

    I met a girl who carried a notebook in which she wrote down some sort of ongoing details about her cosplay character. I referred to her as livejournal forward slash [rotating drunken insult] the rest of the night.
