Ironing Polo Shirt Collars
August 21, 2006 by Greg

I have a few polos in my closet. After I launder them, regardless if I fold or hang, leave the collars up or down, the collars always come out flimsy. I found this tip from the style guy.
I have noticed that after a while, some polo shirts get kind of limp and floppy in the collar. I’d recommend that you try spraying the collar with sizing before you iron it. Sizing is the stuff that makes brand-new clothes so crisp. It comes in a spray can, like spray starch, but it’s softer than starch, making fabric firm rather than hard. You should be able to find it at the grocery store or at what we used to call the five-and-dime. It may cost more than a can of spray starch, but a little goes a long way.
I haven’t used sizing before, but I’ll take a look at the grocery store. I assume spray starch would work as well.

Summertime is a great time for polos. I’ve found that if you take the shirt out of the dryer, just as soon as possible, and form the collar to the way you like to wear it, then fold or hang…you’ll have a collar that works the next time you’re ready to wear the polo.
Additionally, I believe it is worth while to spend a little more on a good polo. Not that you have to spend much…but, the key really is to try them on before you buy. I’ve been bitten buy this in the past and I wish I would learn from my mistakes. Many times, I see a polo in the store and think to myself, “Self, that looks like a nice polo!” I like the pattern, or I just simply need another color in my polo rotation. Then I get it home and get ready to wear it the next day. I find it is not really what I am hoping for…it’s either too form fitting…too loose…the buttons around the collar ride funny…or you can see my damn nipples through the shirt, which means I need an undershirt. My point is that polo’s can vary quite a bit and the care and maintenance can be impacted if you spend a little time getting to know the shirt before you bring it home.
