how to : write a cover letter
January 9, 2007 by Cash

In the spirit of my own New Year’s resolution to get a new job, here’s some easy tips to improve your resume by using a cover letter.
A cover letter helps expand upon your interest in a company, as well as quickly summarizing your unique qualifications for the job.
From an industry perspective, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with
- important business or technological trends
- significant recent transactions
- hiring trends, popular terms
- phrases and subject matter
For each individual job, you’ll want to know
- the nature of the company’s business
- its major clients or customers
- its history, important recent transactions or developments
- hiring trends and employment needs
Another bit of excellent advice;
Avoid irrelevant information. You don’t have much space, so only tell the employer about skills and experiences which apply to the specific job, no matter how impressive or significant they might seem. If you won the All-Nevada Elvis Impersonation Contest, keep it to yourself, unless you’re applying for a job as an Elvis impersonator.

That’s a lot of work…
Definitely. If it’s a job you think you’d love going to every day though, how much is the effort worth?
