How Big is Your TV?

I’m currently in the market for an LCD TV.  I’m currently looking for sizes 23-28″ to fit on some built in shelving that I proudly installed myself.  As I look at the prices jump dramatically as the size increases by just a few inches, I began to wonder how much Urban Monarch readers value their TVs.  So let’s hear it.  How big is your TV?

    Playing Wii Sports is…. remarkable.

51 inches - but in desperate need of an upgrade. It is HD, but let’s put it this way - it has wheels.

My living room TV is a 40″ LCD, and it’s the perfect size for my apartment.

I bought a 26″ LCD for my bedroom, but it felt HUGE — it dwarfed everything else in the room. I’ve returned to my old 19″ TV for now, but may get a 22-23″ TV for the bedroom in a few months.

Currently I’ve got a POS from what I would guess is the late 90’s which whines if the screen is too bright.

I’m lookin to upgrade to a 46″. Seems like it would be the right size for my living room. Thankfully, I’ve got a friend who can score a nice 40% discount on Sony LCD HDTV’s. Mmm, Sony.

I’m sticking with my 19″. I have a small place, and really don’t watch TV enough to warrant upgrading right now. When it finally goes TU, then I might rethink my decision, but probably won’t go larger. I also like that I have my DVD player built in to the TV, again I’m a bit cramped for space here. I was warned against getting the all-in-one, but so far it has all worked just fine. I guess the older you get, the less important being cutting-edge becomes.

*sigh* I’m a little ashamed to admit that I have a 62″ DLP. Ashamed because I think it denotes emphasis on the wrong priorities. Interestingly enough, I actually began watching TV LESS when I got the bigger screen. Movies are fun to watch, but it makes the living room so much smaller. High Def was made for sports and I love it, but when people see it, they think I’m compensating for something. I need therapy!

Yes… I would judge you Ben.

Ben, Greg would only judge you because it makes him feel better about having a TV from a garage sale sitting amongst his uber high-end designer furniture.

I’ve made the post-purchase discovery that size does not matter. I bought a very nice and excessively large 42″ LCD (the man-geek in me took over while shopping. I set out for a 37″). It’s great, but the set it replaced was much smaller and up close Standard Def actually looks worse because it has to stretch the crappy 480i signal image over a much larger area. I had to rearrange the room to move the set further away until I got to that critical sweet spot where the pixels gelled into a smooth image. Now I’m realizing that I really would have done better getting smaller (and cheaper) set and just keeping it close.

The HDTV does look fantastic, and the set could stand to be closer for that, but only about half my tv watching is HD (and getting the expanded HD cable channels would do little to affect that), so I have to compromise between the two. The SD set sat about 12 feet away, and I think a 37″ would be about max for that distance before you run into the same issue I had. I moved my 42″ out to about 16 feet now and it’s good.

Fenriz; that’s a great point, and one thing I remember back when I did have a pimping huge place (now I live in a tiny studio) was this; to truly appreciate a TV, LCD or otherwise, you’re supposed to be able to sit like, what is it, 6x the diagonal measure away from it?

So you need some room to appreciate the larger sizes.
