Healthy Vices

Salad makes me happy

My mind has some built in loops.  When something distracts my usual thoughts or an event occurs that affects me strongly, I go into an infinite loop that without a proper redirection, I’ll stay in for days.  Coming home last night from what I’ll describe as “not my proudest moment of 2008″ I was definitely spinning.

I’ve tried a few things like getting at the piano and getting into a yoga posture, but they don’t quite work the way a stiff drink or two does with my troubles.  Last night though, I headed to the grocery store for some comfort food.  Apparently, a can of coconut water, a salad with gorgonzola and grapes, and a scoop or two of cinnamon ice cream was all I needed to get back on track.  Definitely a vice I’ll continue to use.

What grounds you when you’re freaking out?

    A looooong walk.

-nice 6+ mile hike in the woods
-jazz, or something calming with no singing
-go down to the beach, normally after dark, and just listen to the waves crashing against the shore.

A LONG bubble bath, with the same sort of music goat likes in the background, scented candles, the “works”. Can’t forget my bath pillow either. I just close my eyes and ‘zone out’. I will add extra hot water as I need it, and stay put until I start to ‘prune’. It works every time. It’s the combination of the hot water, the ‘aromatherapy’ and great music. However, songs with words are distracting, as one tries to follow them in one’s head. That totally defeats the purpose.

cooking / preparing food. any kind. not even to eat it. The act of creating a meal is totally zen.
