Gift Giving on the Cheap

October 17, 2006 by Greg

Two years ago around holiday season I found myself with little money. I had recently left my job and work was just getting started on my own business. I was happy with my lifestyle, but I wanted to get gifts for my girlfriend. I joined Columbia House DVD club and One Spirit book club. Joining these clubs entitled me to 5 DVDs and 5 books for almost nothing. Grouping a DVD, a book, and an inexpensive trinket or two (eg stuffed animal, candy, candle), made some great presents.

Discussion: What are your tips for gift giving when the funds are low?

As I’ve mentioned before, I think this is a GREAT idea.

My only suggestion is to use BMG rather than Columbia House.

BMG offers a ‘positive option’ membership choice that means you’re ONLY sent stuff you’ve ordered. Unlike that “Director’s Selection” bullshit that columbia house still offers.

Does bmg do a DVD club too?

Sadly no. I wonder if there are any other competitors in that realm. Readers?

Maybe this is a girlie thing to do: but I tend to stock pile items throughout the year when I catch them on sale. This allows me to always have gifts on hand. Just in case I need to throw something together. Good items to seek out candles, bath items, gift boxes, stationary to name a few.Bottles of wine purchased in bulk.

I love SecondSpin.com for buying cheap DVD’s and cheap CD’s. They check everything to make sure it’s in playing order and won’t skip. Yeah some of it’s used, but it’s working and good. Everything I’ve received from there has been in tip top shape and they ship all over the place. When I was going to school in California I used to order from them all the time. Just an idea….

    Good ideas girls.

I’ve often toyed with the idea of getting a case of a liquor or wine and use that as present to the 12 closest friends in my life. However, I never seem to have a spare hundo or two at that time.
