Back when I worked for one of the nation’s top 5 brokerage firms, business trips to NYC weren’t uncommon. One of my best meals at the time came via a broker’s invitation (and use of his expense account) to Gallagher’s Steak House. If my single malt scotch-infused memory serves, the bill was around $800. For the five of us. One thing I know for sure? Gallagher’s meat- aged 21 days and broiled over hickory logs- was delicious.
I’d always wanted to try Denver’s own incarnation of Gallagher’s, and thanks to Denver Restaurant Week, did so last night without breaking the bank.
My dishy date and I arrived for our early reservation just as the sun was setting beyond the criss-crossing silhouette of cranes bringing Denver’s first Four Seasons hotel to life. The dining room’s dark wood paneling was offset perfectly by the bright, red & white checkered tablecloths.
Service was quick and attentive, without being overbearing. The food itself was divine. I started things off with a creamy lobster bisque, rich with flavor and tender lump crab meat that seemed to melt in my mouth. Next up was a decent cut of prime rib, cooked precisely to my ‘medium rare’ specifications, with just a hint of pink in the center. For dessert; maple creme brulee, silky smooth on the inside with just the right amount of crispness to its caramel lid.
My girlfriend enjoyed a marinated chicken breast followed by homeade chocolate ice cream. We shared cramed spinich and ‘gold’ mashed potatoes.
Our meal came to a perfect conclusion when, leaving through the bar, I ran into an old friend who lives in the high-rise above the steakhouse. He treated me to a shot of Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum. Why not? Why not indeed.
THE SAVINGS
As per Denver Restaurant Week specifications, the total price of our meal (2 people, 3 courses each) was $52.80.
A quick scan at their regular menu suggests that the ‘normal’ price of our dinner would have been around $120.
Viva la Denver Restaurant Week forever!

Very nice. I recently went to the DC restaurant week myself… went to some highly rated Mediterranean place that was in a super-fancy hotel. I don’t recall the exact price of the meal had it not been restaurant week, it was around the $80 mark for two.
The food was pretty delicious, but I think way overpriced for what we got. Additionally, they brought out the wrong salad at first, and they initially refused to comp the ($20!) valet as they normally would, but apparently the free valet wasn’t valid during restaurant week, so says their website which “I didn’t check” as I booked through OpenTable.
Dinner (still on their “special events” page, haha!)
Clam Chowder
Spinach Salad With Roasted Tomato & Candied Walnuts & Maple Balsamic Dressing
Petite Filet with Roasted Purple Potato & Pomegranate Reduction
Broiled Arctic Char with Wild Mushroom Risotto & Lemon Caper Relish
Ginger Crème Brulee
Chocolate Mousse Cake
Tasty, but I’m going to have to book somewhere else next time. Maybe fondue…
Oh man.. what a hassle! I was kind of expecting a uppity backlash when I stipulated “Oh no, not the regular menu, us po’ folk need the Denver Restaurant Week menu”. Alas, they were as gracious as could be. I’m sure it varies from restaurant to restauarnt.
I have to say though, I was VERY impressed with Open Table and will likely do a post on it here very soon. Especially for high traffic times like restaurant week, mother’s day, valentine’s, etc, I think it’s a solid system to say the least.
Thanks for the comment Jess, as always!
I went to Tamayo last night for restaurant week and I had the ceviche as my first course. Main course of the chicken breast with a root vegetable puree. It came on a bed of mashed potatoes and a side of rice and black beans. For desert I had the banana filled empanadas that were coated in cinnamon and sugar, topped with cinnamon ice cream and a plantain chip. Oh man was my whole meal delicious. I did glance at the regular menu to see that my chicken breast was normally $23. Thankfully because of restaurant week, I was able to enjoy one of the best meals I’ve ever had. So yummy….
OH lawd Raquel.. now you’ve got me hungry for some ceviche.. AND something from tomayo’s excellent tequila selection!
I had a great Tamayopolitan which was a cosmo with tequila. YUMM!!!!!!
Tomorrow I will be going to Limelight, I’ll be sure to let you know how that is….
went to an amazing japanese place in NYC during their resteraunt week, found a “tasting menu” option on their normal menu that was only slightly more than the resturaunt week deal but let you try small appetizer size dishes of like half the menu as opposed to special the full meal package. so we got to try way more of a selection of the menu. was a great way to checkout a vast portion of their menu. this place was crazy. they would make fresh tofu every 2 hours or so…
That’s awesome.
Question Jess/Goat: How much was the restaurant week deal in your cities?
looking at the fliers for the one end of jan beginning of feb it was 24$ lunch, 35$ dinners. damn, why’d i miss that this time around?!?!
Cash: I think it was $20 lunch and $30 dinner. Washington DC / Metro area.
