Free Online World Travel Guides
September 11, 2006 by Greg

The wikitravel project is a free online world travel guide with current and reliable information. Created and edited by wikitravellers, all the content is created by users who have something to say about the area. If a visitor has a question, they post it for the community on the talk section found on each entry.
Most entries contain a lot of regularly updated information about a specific area. Entries start with a map and description of the major metropolitan areas. Information that follows includes travel to and within, economics, safety, climate, cost, culture and more.
For those not familiar with the local language, phrase books are there to help. These are quick guides that teach the basics. The english phrase is given followed by the translation. The type of information found here will help a traveler ask for a bathroom, directions, and lodging.
Itineraries are available for a few select locations. This is a growing area of wikitravel, but if the area you are visiting is featured here, it can be handy to have a guide to seeing a country in a few days.

Damn work firewall keepin me down! Looks like a great site though, I’ll be checking it out from home.
Yeah, it will be great for our trip this spring.

Hi, Greg! Nice review of Wikitravel — I’m glad you found it so useful. I agree that some of our more interesting features, like itineraries, are just getting going, but I hope that as we have more of the destination guides hitting a mature level, the itineraries and such will be the area of growth on the site.
Thanks for the tip of the hat, hope Wikitravel works for you in the future.
