6 months ago I discovered my camera broken.  I tried to repair it myself and failed.  I shoved it in a drawer and forgot about it.  5 months later, I decided to send it back to the manufacturer.  They replied slowly with an option: pay $100 for the repair or pay $175 for a refurb.

I replied stating my dissatisfaction with their product, my lack of intent to put any more money into their obviously defective product, and clearly laid out my preferred solution.  I also informed them I was not interested in having the camera returned, and if this was their solution, please just dispose of the camera for me.

A week later I received another letter with the same quote for repair or refurb option.  I quickly grabbed a sticky note and wrote the simple inscription.

Don’t be jerks.  I don’t want to pay any more money for this camera.  Either fix it or send me a coupon.  DO NOT SEND IT BACK TO ME.

I fully expected to receive a package in the mail.  I eagerly anticipated the event because I fully intended on refusing delivery and returning to sender.  However, this morning to my surprise, I received a phone call from accounting.  They informed me that they would be fixing my camera for free despite the scratches on the case and missing screws from the body.  It should be back within 7 to 10 days.

It pays to be persistent.
