Film Transformations

I’ve always thought Edward Norton was some kind of tricksy shape shifter. Transforming from a little wormy character to the meticulously sculpted lead in American History X is no accomplishable feat by a mere human. Blogger Deputy Dog has collected Edward Norton and 9 other actor transformerations (holy crap look at that misspelling) in his top 10 physical transformations for film.

  1. Christian Bale - Machinist/Batman Begins
  2. Robert De Niro - Raging Bull
  3. Hilary Swank - Boys Don’t Cry
  4. Charlize Theron - Monster
  5. Ed Norton - American History X
  6. Matt Damon - Courage Under Fire
  7. Jared Leto - Chapter 27
  8. Eric Bana - Chopper
  9. Renee Zellwegger - Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason
  10. Sylvester Stallone - Cop Land

Check out the full list for pics and commentary. Does anyone know what a ’stone’ is?

    Totally agree Goat.

Christian Bale’s Machinist transformation was unnerving. Listening to him talk about ‘how’ he accomplished it (check the special features) would make an anorexic blush. His willingness to sacrifice his comfort for a role sets him apart as the actor of our generation. It’s one thing to bulk up with a trainer, eat right for a few months, and get cut. (Seriously, with a trainer whipping your ass into shape anyone can do that). It’s another thing entirely to push yourself to the verge of death for a role.

Bale’s dedication to his craft is stunning. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

The Machinist has been in my netflix queue for sometime, I think it’s about that time to move it on up.

I’ve never seen Courage Under Fire, but after reading the list and looking at the pictures, I have to see it now.

ahhh stones. That’s how I was weighed over in London. It sounds so much better when you are only a few stones instead of over a 100 pounds. Much easier on the ears. And I like Greg’s new theme song Cash. Nicely done!

    From Wikipedia:

“Christian Bale starved himself for over 4 months prior to filming, as his character needed to look drastically thin. Allegedly his eating consisted of one can of tuna and an apple each day (approximately 275 calories), although there are conflicting reports on this. According to the DVD commentary, he lost 62 pounds (28 kg), reducing his body weight to 120 pounds (54.4 kg). Bale wanted to go down to 100 pounds (45.3 kg) but the filmmakers would not let him due to health concerns. He later regained the weight, plus an additional 40 pounds (18 kg) due to weightlifting, in preparation for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.”

    Holy…

I gotta say Charlize Theron for Monster was also a huge change. Maybe not as much weight as Renee but drastic for sure.
