Farewell to UM; An Ode, A Lament

October 3, 2008 by Cash

“Hang on tightly, let go lightly”.

It was Clive Owen’s refrain in “The Croupier” and it’s damn good advice.  Having spent the last two and half years consumed by my passion for Urban Monarch, our readers and my partnership with Greg however, it’s not the easiest to follow.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a touch of sadness when faced with the prospect of Urban Monarch free days. It’s become a part of me.  So many great memories.  From the simple thrill of brainstorming over coffee @ Leela’s to the extravagant debauchery of our epic Las Vegas boondoggle, UM has proven a deliciously naughty mistress indeed.  I feel blessed to have welcomed so many new friends into my life through UM as well (Goat, Steve, Jess, Caroline, Telan.. I’m looking at you for starters).  The education I’ve received from Greg on all things blogosphere, Google analytics and the like has been priceless, and the pride I’ve felt knowing thousands of people all over the world are reading and responding to my writing has been fulfilling in ways even a million dollar payday never could be.

Still, the time for change is upon me.  I’m optimistic and excited about what lay ahead. The most important thing I take away from UM is the sense of truly experiencing the world around me.  Paying attention.  Staying tuned in.  When you’re writing everyday, you develop a subconscious agenda to always be on the lookout for the next post idea.  It made me realize how much I’d been missing.

I used to say I lived for Urban Monarch.  This wasn’t entirely true.  It’s probably more fitting to say Urban Monarch reminded me how good it is to live.

Everyone should be so lucky.

Finally, to all my friends and family members who’ve shown concern about me and my pending departure; don’t worry.  This time I’m definitely setting up the impressive spare.

xoxo

Well, I. for one, am going to miss you greatly. You mentioned a new site, but I haven’t seen an addy for it, maybe I missed it? I will visit you there, if I know how to GET there. It’s been great reading your stuff, and I’m sure I speak for us all when I say we’ve learned a lot from you, too. Good luck in everything you are attempting, and I know your future will always be bright. I wish I could say something clever or inspiring, but I’m having trouble finding the right words right now. I’m also finding this very sad, so before I make a total fool of myself, I’ll just stop writing now. Please do let me know where on the internets to look for you again.

Thanks for the kind words Caroline. My temporary home is at http://www.drunkensherpa.com Within a few weeks, I’ll have a brand new site up and running. I’ll be posting daily on drunken sherpa until then. I hope to see you there.
