drunken watermelon pops
May 12, 2008 by Cash

With temperatures already heating up at UM headquarters, my thoughts are drifting to summer treats. One of my favorites? Watermelon.
How to make something already good even better? Add booze, duh.
CHOW magazine has a great recipe for Drunken Watermelon Pops that would be perfect for a rooftop patio get together.
I’m looking at you Cerveny.

I just checked the recipe, and it sounds great. I do make my own vanilla vodka, so I would try it with that. (Homemade vanilla vodka…any bottle of good vodka, one large GOOD quality vanilla bean, split. Insert into vodka, put in dark, cool place, shake gently once a day for at least 2 weeks. A month is about the longest you would want the bean in there. Strain, clean bottle, and refill. (It can get TOO strong on the vanilla flavour, so check after 2 weeks) Don’t try turning this into a liquor by adding sugar or simple syrup to the bottle itself, if you want a sweet drink add simple syrup to the drink as you’re building it.
BTW, when I remove the vanilla bean, I dry it off, then bury it in a canister of sugar. I use the sugar for baking or garnishing sweets and fruits.
We know you’re really putting the vodka soaked vanilla bean in your morning coffee.
I’m offically inviting myself over to Caroline’s next time she bakes cookies.
Actually, most of my favourite recipes have booze or wine of some sort in them!! Making your own flavoured drink is fun, and can be great, fairly inexpensive Christmas presents. There are lots of great recipes for these online, but I love to experiment. I’m making steak with a brandy sauce for dinner tonight, steak on the grill of course. I’m trying mushrooms in the brandy sauce. (Sorry, vegetarians!!)
