drinking: best cheese for cheap white wine

March 27, 2007 by Cash

cheesy

Although I’m not a white wine (or wine in general) conisseur by any means, I’ve recently discovered three bottles in my fridge.  Two were gifts which arrived during my birthday extravaganza, one I discovered at a weekly wine tasting @ Divino.

Of the three bottles, two are of the very inexpensive variety.  As the days begin to warm up, a plate full of cheese and crackers might be just the thing to inspire me to open a bottle.

But what cheese goes best with a less expensive white?

Chow Hound has a thread where people offer their suggestions.

I think I’ve found just the thing;

Sauvignon Blanc: Cheddar (4yr old), CHEVRE (goat cheese), GRUYERE, PROVOLONE (real italian, not the american stuff), TOMME BASCO

Any readers with alternative selections?  My palate is pretty wide open to cheeses of all types.  I look forward to your comments below.

    I suggest you start drinking them already.

    I suggest you boys finally make it over to my place and we can finish up the wine and cheese from my party last week. All I have is inexpensive wine and lots of cheese. Then you can see which ones you like the best together. I have a really good gruyere fondue with cheddar in it along with some spicy cheap white wine. Tasty…

    What! This is crap. Why weren’t we invited to the real party?

    Because it was girls night. I know you look smashing in a wig and heels…but it was just the girls. Sorry. How about April 4th? Does that work for everyone?

    Alright if you want to buy a really good cheap white wine I suggest a Gewurztraminer (Columbia Winery makes a tasty one) and drink it either with a Gruyere/cheddar fondue (I have a recipe if you really want one) or else brie topped off with raspberry chipotle sauce. The wine says to pair with a spicy food. The raspberry chipotle sauce is great for that. Tangy yet not overbearing. There you go.

    And one of my last days of freedom. I think you’re onto something Jillian. Who’s volunteering to pick us up from the light rail station????

    If you can make it to the Santa Fe and Mineral Station I will pick you up.
