Distractions.  Between porno, IM, email, wwtdd.com and about a thousand other cool sites vying for my attention, it can be hard to stay focused when writing.  This is one reason I’ve started paying more attention to personal productivity suggestions. Spurned on largely by Greg & Glenn’s prowess in this regard, I’m happy to report on a new tool I’ve found that’s helping me get down to business:  Darkroom.

Darkroom is an incredibly simple word processor.  It has a black background and green text in the courier font.  It expands to cover your whole screen, keeping your eyes on your work.

Couple it with a few 48 minute sessions, and you’ll be caught up for the week.

Darkroom is Windows only

back midway through college i started using vim as my editor/word processor of choice. minimalist doesn’t even begin to describe the layout, but powerful as hell. steep learning curve, esp if you’re from a windows/mac computing background, and not for the easily frustrated.

on a seperate note i find if i just keep my web browser closed that helps a lot. the act of actually having to go and open up the browser each time makes me rethink if i need to do that vs just changing to the alread open window.

I like to delete the shortcuts for the webbrowser off my desktop and dock. It takes less than a couple of minutes to put them back but it helps me stay focused longer.

    Great piece of software.
It looks like that darkroom is a copy of an OS X software : WriteRoom.
So for mac users, this way http://www.hogbaysoftware.com/product/writeroom

The trend towards minimalist, solidly built software is encouraging, especially in regards to word processing, which seems to have a lot of cruft these days. Thanks for the pointer!

(Also, I think you meant “spurred”, not “spurned”. Though the connotations of the latter are amusing…)
