I have a metal side table I use as a destination / arrival station.  It sits right by my bedroom door and stores my wallet, keys, pen, mints, sunglasses, cell phone, and anything else I need before going out.  Instead of haphazardly placing these items around the room, they now have a home.  Just as it collects my items, it also reminds me of what I need to grab when I go out.

Over at lifehack.org, they’ve got ideas for 7 more stations for your home.  While targeted at the family, I think most homes could use stations of these design.  The list includes a Destination Station, Communication Station, Donation Station, Gift and Shipping Station, Education Station, Creation Station, and an Administration Station.
