Alright guys, the next Urban Monarch Book Club selection is up for grabs and you’ve got a chance to cast your vote.  Here are two geeked out selections that are on my radar.

Too geeky?  Are you into it?  Any other suggestions?

Podcast Review: The Moth Podcast

September 16, 2008 by Greg · Leave a Comment

The moth podcast is personal story telling through an impersonal internet.  Each story is unique, genuine, and the best part, completely and utterly captivating.  From struggling carpenters to new york city cops, it’s about real people with real stories.

The stories range in length from approximately 5 to 17 minutes. Sometimes funny, occasionally sad, often poignant, we hope you will find the stories memorable and representative of many aspects of human experience.

A few of my favorites in the recent downloadable past have been Ed Gavagan’s Drowning on Sullivan Street and Todd Hanson’s The Triumph of Apathy.

harder, better, stop it, stop it

September 12, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments

Any regular reader knows my obsession with Daft Punk runs into the realm of madness.  My adoration for the pyramid people truly knows no bounds.

Still, I have to admit I’m almost “harder, better, faster, stronger” re-mixed out.  Yes, there are some great versions.  But considering how much of their catalog remains untouched, remix wise, I wish someone would step up and get to work.

Two songs in particular demanding this treatment?

Human After All
Prime Time of Your Life

Get to work you Acid/Abelton maestros.

co clubs vs beta

September 11, 2008 by Cash · 3 Comments

The latest salvo in the ongoing struggle for Denver area dj domination?

Co clubs sends out an email: Hybrid, tonight, The Church - no cover plus $1 drinks before 11

Decent, right?

Too bad BETA’s Thursday night features Richie Hawtin and is gonna OWN.

Oooh. That’s right. I went there Co clubs. Zing!

Check out Westword’s primer on Hawtin here

Watching Tv for Your Girlfriend

September 9, 2008 by Greg · 6 Comments

A couple TV shows I’ve been watching have been primarily for my  girlfriend.  First, Saving Grace, a crime show based in Oklahoma City featuring Holly Hunter and her saving angel.  Second, Bones, a crime show featuring an uber smart anthropologist and her drama filled team.  While neither of these shows appeal to me, I really just watch them to share experiences with her.

Anyone else watching TV for their partners?

Tv on the iPhone

Since I’ve been spending my days in bed resting, I’ve been downloading tv shows and watching them on my phone.  This rocks.  Now if I could only find them somewhere for free…

Daniel Radcliffe is Cool

I don’t know where all these videos are from, but they kill me.  Daniel Radcliffe is way cooler than I previously thought.

This sweet slice of A/V dorkery needs to be seen, and heard, to be believed.

Don’t miss the goods that start around 1:35 especially.

If there’s one thing I love, it’s carazy tales of drug induced fun.  This story has it all.

new york times not sucking for once

August 27, 2008 by Cash · 6 Comments

My disdain for the NY Times is legendary.  Once in awhile though, they come through.  Take a quote from today’s edition from an article about this micro, underground restaurant ‘clubs’ popping up in NYC (like Underground Carrot x1000):

Meat is murder.  Tasty, tasty murder.

Ole!

unintentional b-list

August 27, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments

Walking into work today, I noticed a commotion by Earl’s on 16th street.  A huge crowd had gathered, along with the requisite army of DNC related police.  Working my way through the masses, I quickly determined two things; first, they were hosting some kind of a ‘press conference’ with what appeared to be 4 vaguely recognizeable actors.  Second, neither I, nor one person I overheard could tell who the hell any of them were.

How sad to be famous and yet completely unknown.   By sad I mean, in your FACE, losers.

elena isinbaeva

My viewing of the olympic games has been limited to the occasional upward glance at a TV in the bar when people start hooting, and or hollaring.

After seeing some pictures of Elena Isinbaeva, I think I may need to start paying more attention.

More pics here, perv.

Foraging in the Airport

August 21, 2008 by Greg · 3 Comments

I eat a minimum of 5 times per day.  Every few hours I’m picking some kind of vegetarian health food into palatable bites.  When I find myself in my usual haunt, the airport terminal, I spend a bit of time cruising the gates looking for some kind of dining option.  Rarely though do I find something to satiate myself.

What I don’t understand is how the quality of food drops as it passes through the airport security.  Is the TSA actively filtering tasty and delicious ingredients?  Are the skilled hands that man my city’s Tokyo Joes and Chipotles denied entry to the concourse?

Bad Cash!  BAD YOU.  Straight to bed without a cocktail for this one. (riiiiight..)

In my recent report on upcoming Colorado concerts, I completely spaced out something truly special:

MSTRKRFT   -   Tue  10/28/08  Ogden Theatre

Even more Boo-tyful than a Halloween show by the KRFT?  This time, they’ll be playing live.  Considering how ridiculous their DJ set @ the Church was (see my review here), it should be an unforgettable night.

Aaah, the pending downtown insanity of the Democratic National Convention next week.  One of the craziest things I’ve heard?  The homeless plan to sell sacks of shit to protesters for use in their anti-establishment antics.

Capitalism!

maximum overdrive

August 18, 2008 by Cash · 6 Comments

A couple of years ago a friend of mine gave me a handful of VHS tapes that he’d just replaced with DVDs. They’ve basically sat on the shelf gathering dust since then.  Amongst the goodies was Maximum Overdrive, a movie I’d never seen.  Until yesterday.

dj am urban monarch bounty

August 18, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments

The first reader to send me a link to a currently seeded bit-torrent of a DJ AM set from this year (2008, duh) will receive a Jimi wallet in the color of your choice and more good karma than you can possibly handle.

Being part of his life altering set this past Saturday night at Skylab has me in the mood to hear it again. And again. And again. It was the sickest thing I’ve ever heard outside of a Daft Punk concert.

Just sick good.

P.S. Remember kiddos, it needs to be seeding now.
