Relationship Review Point

August 26, 2008 by Greg · 5 Comments

While visiting friends recently, they shared with me a dating pattern their roommate uses.  She schedules regular reviews with scientific rigidity to evaluate the relationship.  If she approaches a hard spot but it’s not a review point, she doesn’t prematurely end the partnership. Instead she chooses to work through the problems till the next review checkpoint.

Any thoughts on this?  Does it sound like a logical way to keep a relationship strong or an overly methodic approach to dating?

only the names have changed - the church denver goth night

August 11, 2008 by Cash · 6 Comments

I’ve been into the Goth/Industrial scene since you were knee-high to a grasshopper. Seriously. My sophomore year in high-school included my first trip to a ‘goth night’ and was anything but my last.

Ground zero (Boulder), Rock Island (Denver) and Club L.A. (Westminster) were favorite haunts of mine during my formative black trench coat wearing days.

I still love the music, and believe me I could school most latex corset wearing mistresses in any goth triva game.

Nowadays though, most of my clubbing is a lot, more ahem, ‘upbeat’ in nature, but an outing to the Church last night for their weekly goth party actually made me somewhat sad.

Cash Archives - Pissing Off Girls

July 16, 2008 by Greg · Leave a Comment

While perusing the Cash archives, I found this little tidbit on how to offend the fairer sex.

Although each girl is unique and delightful in their own way, one thing seems to bind them all together.  It’s a simple way you can accidentally (or I suppose, on purpose) piss them off:

Call them ‘dude’.

When I was in college my girlfriend and and her housemates liked to throw large parties on a semi-regular basis.  Standing in the kitchen during one of said events, her close friend told me how offended she was that someone recently called her ‘buddy.’  I found the tidbit highly entertaining. After 20 minutes of repeating her new nickname, I found myself with her beer all over my face.

The Cash Archives - Being Cheap at Strip Clubs

July 14, 2008 by Greg · 2 Comments

Since cash can’t currently write a new post for himself, I’m looking through a few of his archives to relive some of the memories. Nothing quite captures the essence of Cash like his fine piece on saving money at the strip clubs. Being cheap with cheap girls is the quintessential cash.

My favorite tips:

Go early, on a weekday if possible. Many clubs offer reduced cover at these times, as well as happy hour specials for drinks. Additonal tip: Go in the afternoon, get your hand stamped, and come back later (when the hotter girls are likely dancing).

Bring a flask. Here in Denver at least, you arn’t frisked/forced thru a metal detector, etc on arrival. Ordering diet cokes (claim you’re the designated driver, to stay on the waitstaff’s good side) and then topping them off with something stronger is a great way to save money while getting your buzz on. Tip well and tip often if your sexy cocktail waitress is bringing you sodas (you’re still saving $$$ vs buying full priced drinks).

Who wants to go to the strip club on a Wednesday afternoon with their own flask of booze? Cash, that’s who. And if you do to, maybe you should throw $20 on a new computer for him.

post-movie happy hour x2

July 2, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments

Downtown, there’s one place to see a movie:  Denver Pavilions.

Sadly, it’s stuck smack dab in the middle of the uber-touristy 16th street mall.  Though not a bad spot in general, it can be horrible if you have your sights set on cheap drinking.

UM to the rescue then, with two great happy hours nearby. Whether your pleasure is drinking before a movie, after, or both, we’ve got you covered.

Thoughts on Life: Shadiest of Places

My most solid friends have come from the shadiest of places.

happy birthday, lipgloss

June 27, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments

Tyler Jacobson (DJ Danger) and Michael Trundle (Boyhollow)’s “Lipgloss” has been a Friday night institution of hipstery hijinks here in Denver for 7 years running.

Equal parts brit-pop + indie + disco dance party, bleeding edge electro freak fest and cheap beer bonanza, Lipgloss is a guaranteed good time, everytime.

I can remember its humble beginnings as  “Hypersonic” at the super sleazy Snakepit oh so many moons ago.  Its current home at the upscale salsa house La Rumba (9th & Acoma) seems far more fitting;  like fine wine, classic Smiths tracks and yours truly - Lipgloss just gets better and better with age.

Join Danger & Boyhollow for tonight’s celebration:

beta nightclub denver review - insane potential

May 21, 2008 by Cash · 3 Comments

beta.jpg

Beta nightclub, recently opened by the owners of Beatport records is probably the best club in the country right now, if not the world.

The biggest? Hell no. The most exclusive? Not even close. The best.

If they can work through some issues with ticketed events, Beta will put Denver on the map worldwide as an epicenter of dance and DJ culture.

If they can’t? Well, we’ll have a repeat performance or two of last Thursday night, and then people will go elsewhere.

reader input: women and first impressions

May 8, 2008 by Cash · 7 Comments

japanese-men.JPG

In all the time I’ve spent studying socializing and ‘pick-up’ one thing that really stands out is the importance of a first impression.
Countless ‘experts’ point out that once you’ve been perceived as creepy/weird/etc there’s no going back.  You can never recover from making a woman feel uneasy the first time she meets you.

I’m not here to argue the point.

poll: hottest milf in hollywood?

I’m an opinionated ass. It’s a responsibility I take very seriously. One of the opinions that’s been pissing my friends off en masse lately is this: Jessica Alba getting pregnant has totally turned me off.

I’m not saying I could never, ever imagine having my wicked way with her.

She would just have to pay me.

I kid, I kid.

Anyway, thinking of Hollywood mom’s (and in Jessica’s case, mom to be) has me posing the question to you:

I love you.  I do.  All 30,000 of you reading this.   However, I want to start seeing other people.  Mainly, your friends. Since, I’m feeling a little experimental today, I’m going to ask for your help with that.  I’m asking you to tell someone you know about urban monarch.  Tell them about your favorite post, author, or feature.  Tell them to come check it out.  After, send me an email and tell me something you’d like me to share with one my friends, and who knows, maybe I’ll share it with everyone.

Hey Dude, Whatup Homey, Yo Dawg

I often result to calling my friends by the first thing that pops in my head.  Usually what comes out are things like dude, dog, or homey.  I’m beginning to become aware of how just down right stupid this is.  I’d start calling everyone “friend-o” but I think I have to wait another 3 years before that’s no longer a trendy rip-off.  Any recommendations? Something classic perhaps?

the witching hour for new relationships

February 18, 2008 by Cash · 7 Comments

hottie-witch.jpg

Throughout high school, I was fascinated with the occult. I spent plenty of time surrounded by ouija boards, tarot cards, and books galore on subjects like numerology and wicca. It probably didn’t hurt that many of the cute gothy girls I had eyes for were aspiring witches themselves.

One element of wicca and spellcasting I found fascinating was the concept of a ‘witching hour’ for performing rituals. Different for everyone, determining your ‘witching hour’ was a complex process that involved calculations based around elements of your birth time and date, moon phases, etc. It was said to be the most powerful time to work, with the highest chance of success in your black magic endeavors.

Thinking about the broader concept of a ‘witching hour’ during which to start new relationships, I came up with something I think could work for just about everyone.

PS: it has nothing to do with the occult.

valentine’s day cost: $163.37

February 13, 2008 by Cash · 3 Comments

valentines_gifts.jpg

I’ve never been a big believer in Valentine’s day as a ‘real’ holiday, and even if I was, it’s unlikely I’d spend much money on it.  The most romantic things in the world are always home brewed.  Naturally, ’society’ disagrees with me, and most men this year will shell out around $164 for the ‘big day’.  Losers.

quick tip: cologne samples in your messenger bag

February 12, 2008 by Cash · 3 Comments

cologne-samples.JPG

A couple of years ago, I received a package of birthday goodies from an incredibly thoughtful ex of mine.  Amongst the treasures was a large clutch filled with samples of my favorite cologne.  At the time, I had two regular sized bottles on hand, so the bag ended up forgotten in a drawer.

During my move, I grabbed one of the tiny vials and tossed it in my messenger bag.  Turns out it’s the perfect thing to keep on hand; not only can I recharge my scent midday before an important meeting, but I can also do a quick spritz before heading out if my after work plans call for a social engagement prior to going home.  It’s an ideal addition to your travel bag too, considering it falls within the TSA’s new 3oz liquid policy.

I recommend everyone head to the department store and ask for a few free samples of your preferred scent.

Don’t have a favorite?  Ask the cuties behind the counter for suggestions.  Rawr.

rio: women outnumber men. big time.

January 23, 2008 by Cash · 6 Comments

rio-bikini.jpg

Long time UM ally and Christian Bale stunt double Goat forwards an interesting piece on the male:female ratio in one of the sexiest cities on earth, Rio.

If there ever was a place for single males to visit it’s the Brazilian beaches of Rio: for every 100 ladies in the city there are a mere 86.4 males. Strangely enough, the average ratio for other major Brazilian cities is 95 males to 100 females.

One of the coolest factors behind these numbers?

Women Sway, Men Swagger

girls_hips_move.jpg

Perusing BBC’s 100 things we didn’t know last year, I stumbled upon this gem on attraction.  According to a study by New York University, it’s all about the motion.

The team carried out a series of studies involving over 700 participants who were shown a variety of animations and videos of people moving.  Some showed shadow figures, where it was not possible to see if it was a man or a woman, while others obviously showed a man or a woman.  No matter which format was being used, the participants rated women or “female” figures as more attractive if their hips swayed as they walked, while men were more attractive if they had the characteristic shoulder movement.

Leave it to UM friend and Las Vegas impresario Jack Colton (UM interview here) to bring this little gem to my attention.  “The Bank”, a new club in the former home of Light (r.i.p Light.. what a fun venue) @ the Bellagio opens on New Year’s Eve.  You commoners can attend via “general admission” pricing for $250.

Those wishing to live a little larger however, can dive in to a table reservation.

america’s most lustful cities: #1, denver

December 20, 2007 by Cash · 4 Comments

Denver has a good reputation (in my opinion) for several things.  First, we’re one of the fittest cities in the country.  Also, we’re one of the drunkest.  Now, (perhaps as a corollary to that last bit), we’re also the most ‘lustful’, at least based on some data from ACNielsen.
