Things You Should Know - Teflon Pans
July 17, 2008 by Greg · 2 Comments
I could write a heaping cup full of things you should know about the kitchen, but non-stick pans seem to be the thing I see people screwing up the most. So here are a few tips for the teflon-challenged.
- Don’t put teflon pans in the dishwasher. The harsh chemicals in automatic dishwashing detergents damage the non-stick surfaces.
- Don’t use metal utensils when cooking. The metal will scratch and scrape the non stick surface off.
- Don’t use anything over medium heat. Too much heat will affect the surface causing permanent damage.
Mothership Wit - Organic Wheat Beer Review
July 9, 2008 by Greg · 2 Comments

Troubled about going to work? I know I am. There is one beer that stands out as a choice to soothe this cubicle workers aching heart.
New Belgium’s first organic wheat beer Mothership Wit is delicious. A white beer brewed with barley and malt in the Ft Collins eco friendly facility supposedly tastes like citrus and coriander, but to me, this thing tastes like forgotten sadness. With 4.8% alcohol, being green sure is a lot of fun.
Don’t forget to read the instructions for the pour, swirl, hopsy-mixsy routine they have so carefully laid out on the side of the bottle for us laymen.
beer: affordable luxury + makes you hungry
July 7, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments
Two quick comments on beer, glorious beer:
Beer is an affordable luxury. To get a six pack for $8 or $9 is still a good deal. You can buy five of the best beers in the world for under $10. To do that with wine you’d have to take out a second mortgage.”
(That’s not to say beer can’t be steep — Sam Adams’ Utopias costs more than $100 a bottle.)
We say beer is just as good as wine if not better (with food), and beer is a lot better than red wine with cheese,” Muller said. “Hops are great appetite stimulants, so if you have one (beer) before dinner, it will make you hungry.”
-Gene Muller, founder of Flying Fish Brewing Company

post-movie happy hour x2
July 2, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments
Downtown, there’s one place to see a movie: Denver Pavilions.
Sadly, it’s stuck smack dab in the middle of the uber-touristy 16th street mall. Though not a bad spot in general, it can be horrible if you have your sights set on cheap drinking.
UM to the rescue then, with two great happy hours nearby. Whether your pleasure is drinking before a movie, after, or both, we’ve got you covered.

Remember when a single 20oz serving of Mountain Dew could keep you up all night, bouncing off the wall in a state of super stimulated delight?
Boy howdy, I do. Damn you tolerance dam you straight to hell.

coke zero: ultimate mixer, american hero
June 25, 2008 by Cash · 11 Comments
Anyone using Pepsi as a mixer is out of their mind. Coke is the only way to go. That being said though, Coca Cola Classic has its shortcomings. First and foremost? High Fructose Corn Syrup (aka, the silent killer).
Diet Coke on the other hand skips this poisonous ingredient but tastes.. well, yeech.
Enter Coke Zero.
No HFCS, awesome taste, perfect for mixing, or even drinking (GASP!) straight.
Nod Glenn for turning me onto this sweet stuff a full two years before Coke finally woke up and decided to start marketing it properly.
If you’ve never tried it, pick up a 2 litre and get to the taste testing with your favorite booze right now.
UM COMMANDS YOU!

best dinner deal in dowtown denver: pizzeria mundo
June 17, 2008 by Cash · 5 Comments

Pizzeria Mundo used to be an international pizza buffet, featuring all manner of strange ethnicy concoctions. New ownership has changed the menu back to the basics; excellent pie, pasta and a variety of hipster friendly, cheap beer (PBR, Schlitz, Mickey’s). They also serve salads and sandwiches.
The best part is the price.
bar standard patio parties
June 10, 2008 by Cash · 5 Comments

So in my ongoing quest to keep you up to date on the best ways to spend your drinking dollars in Denver, I decided to share an email I sent to my good friend Donnie.
It concerns Bar Standard (see my original review here) and their new Sunday afternoon patio parties:
i love blow
June 2, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments
Though there are plenty of reasons to love long time UM friend and constant commenter Jillian, today it’s all about the blow.
I couldn’t begin to explain / prepare you for what’s in store when you click the link.
I’m sitting here in awe.
Needless to say we will be contacting these people for samples to review.
Thanks for the link Jillian.
Q: Who doesn’t love blow?
A: People who haven’t tried it.
I kid, I kid. Don’t do drugs, stay in school, have a kick ass summer, etc.
Visit the Farmers Market
May 29, 2008 by Greg · 2 Comments

Want the freshest food at the cheapest price with the least impact to the environment? Hit the closest farmer’s market. Buying local produce direct from the growers gets you the foods grown in your area when they are in season.
I already know the location of my favorite market, but if you need to find yours, try FarmersMarket.com. A few of my favorites were listed, so the information seems to be current.

Tony Chachere and Crystal
May 14, 2008 by Greg · 3 Comments

Recently my New Orleans operative came to Denver to bring me a few prized gifts from cajun country: Crystal’s Hot Sauce and Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning. Why does everything in New Orleans have someone’s name attached to it? I don’t know, but Crystal’s is a delicious and cheaper alternative to famed Tobasco brand products and Mr. Tony Chachere is like a cajun Lawry’s seasoning salt. If you see some, buy it, and put it on, well, everything!
drunken watermelon pops
May 12, 2008 by Cash · 4 Comments

With temperatures already heating up at UM headquarters, my thoughts are drifting to summer treats. One of my favorites? Watermelon.
How to make something already good even better? Add booze, duh.
CHOW magazine has a great recipe for Drunken Watermelon Pops that would be perfect for a rooftop patio get together.
I’m looking at you Cerveny.

europeans get drunk ‘to have sex’
May 9, 2008 by Cash · 5 Comments
I don’t know if I find this article entirely too funny, or not funny enough.
According to the BBC:
Young adults in Europe deliberately binge on drink and drugs to improve their sex lives,
The craziest piece for me was this:
this study showed many young people were “strategically” binge drinking or abusing drugs to improve their sex lives.”
“Strategically”? I don’t know if having a carafe and a half of dill vodka before passing out on some sweaty Russian woman in a bathroom stall could be called ’strategy’.
A purely hypothetical example, mind you.
The article also explores how drugs fit into the mix, with this being said about Cocaine:
More than a quarter of youngsters taking cocaine said they used it to prolong sex and drug use in general was linked to having multiple partners.

a filled flask for every occasion
May 1, 2008 by Cash · 4 Comments
Longtime UM reader and health afficianado Ben recently made a horrifying comment on my “liquor: what’s in, what’s out” post:
I have a flask as a groomsman’s gift, but am ashamed to say I’ve never used it. Does it make you look like a raging alcoholic if you have to carry around your booze?
Luckily, it didn’t take long for another treasured reader, Jillian, to pipe up with a suitable retort:
There is no shame in carrying a flask. If anyone has a problem with it or asks about it, just say it is the classier and cheaper way to go about.
Still, in an effort to squash any remaining doubts, here’s our list of suggested libations to keep your flask - and you - warmly buzzed on a variety of occasions:
project angel heart - dining out for life 2008

There are two annual dining events in Denver I try to attend every year. The first, Denver Restaurant Week, has been talked about here and here. The second, Project Angel Heart’s “Dining Out For Life” is a far more important cause and I encourage all of our local readers to make an effort to take part:
bikini bull riding
April 25, 2008 by Cash · 3 Comments
The Liquor Store’s Friday night calendar is a work of mad genius.
Girls in bikinis, on mechanical bulls, served with a large side of booze?
It takes a certain breed of classy, sophisticated gentleman to appreciate such nuanced entertainment.
Luckily, I’m just that kind of gentleman.
Can you say: “Jiggle it, just a little bit”?
We need to get to Boston.
Soon.
Check The Liquor Store’s other events here
UM readers: anyone from Boston been to one of these? Reports, please.
