biphasic sleep and your game

Man Sleeping

Over the last month or so Greg and I have rededicated ourselves to socializing.  We go out four nights a week; Wednesday thru Saturday.  They give us a good mix of weekday/weekend crowds and tend to be the busier nights overall.

At first, we went out from around 9:30 - 11:30.  The reason for ending the night at that time was simple; we both had early morning wake up calls due to work.  It was okay, but the crowds didn’t really heat up until around 11PM, even on Wednesday and Thursday.  We were missing a lot of opportunities for mingling, and decided to try something different last night.

Greg had done some reading on ‘Biphasic sleep’, a more practical alternative to “polyphasic sleep“.  In both methods, you break your nighttime sleep into smaller chunks.  Biphasic, as the name implies, breaks your slumber into two pieces.  The first is shorter, from 70-90 minutes, and is designed to let your mind reach REM just before waking up.  The second phase lasts a more normal 3-6 hours.

Greg stuck to the recommended dose almost exactly (hopefully he’ll chime in on his results). I was a bit more flexible.

7:00PM-9:30PM 1st Sleep Cycle, 2.5 hours
10:45PM-1:30AM Out on the town
2:00AM-6:00AM 2nd sleep cycle, 4 hours

A few notes from the experience;

  1. After my first cycle, I popped a single No Doz, and when Greg arrived we both had a cup of coffee.
  2. During our time on the town, we both commented on how absolutely awake we felt, and the positive impact it had on our moods and social interactions was tangible.
  3. When I made it home, I had a beer and went to bed.  When my alarm went off at 6, it wasn’t any more difficult getting up than normal.
  4. When I arrived at work, I felt very alert, which is unheard of normally after going out the prior night.

My conclusion:

I would recommend Biphasic sleep to anyone trying to be more productive overnight; be it for mingling, cramming for an exam, or just working on a project that requires your full attention.

Yeah I’m tired. Here was my schedule:

    7:00PM-8:30PM 1st Sleep Cycle, 1.5 hours
    10:45PM-1:30AM Out on the town
    2:00AM-6:30AM 2nd sleep cycle, 4.5 hours

Waking up was surprisingly easy, both times. When I took my 90 minute nap in the evening, I woke up feeling alert, rather than groggy, which usually happens. Same thing with this morning, woke up much easier than my usual mornings.

However, I’m pretty sleepy right now. However it might be a lack of food. I didn’t eat breakfast, drank a coffee. Now, drinking my protein boosted jamba juice, I’m feeling a little more of the fire!

I’m doing it again tonight. Maybe all weekend. Who knows!?

I’m totally trying it again tonight. I had a bit of a lull right after lunch, but that’s typical.

More stupid ass posts. You guys couldn’t sarge a water buffalo if it bit you in the ass. LOL

FYI, the polyphasic link in the post is actually about biphasic sleeping. A guys has been sleeping 3 hours at night and 90 minutes in the evening for years now with no adverse effects.

Polyphasic sleeping is hard hard hard to do, but biphasic is in the realm of possibility. Remember it’s about sleep cycles, increments of around 90 minutes.

Cash, you might modify your schedule to sleep a total of 6 or 7.5 hours and see if you notice any differences. Also, put more time between when you wake up from your nap and when you go back to bed for “core sleep.” I think Glen Rhodes takes a 90 minute nap around 5-6PM, and then gets 3 hours of core sleep from 3-6AM.

I’ll give it a try Glenn.

hmm, so are you planning to make this your permenant new sleep cycle setup, or was this more of an experiment/every once in a while change of pace?

I’m wondering how well people do going back and forth between sleep styles on a regular basis, seems like a bad idea, great way to confuse you body

Goat; good question. Greg was telling me last night that in the research he’s done, it seems Biphasic is not entirely difficult to swap out with ‘regular’ sleep on the weekends or whatever.

All things considered though, I’ll probably try to do this going forward. Even when I’m not out meeting people those extra, quiet hours at home could be very productive. Polyphasic sleep on the other hand, completely screws up your body and I have no desire to try it.

I think Arch Angel is our biggest fan.

I feel like a lot of people are already doing this and perhaps just don’t know the technical name for it. A lot of people will usuall take a nap when they get home from work or school (at least I do) and then stay up later in the night to do whatever; things like watch TV, play video games, etc. In our case it’s going out sarging. I always try to fit in a 90 minute nap if I know I’m going to be out really late. Most people only get about six hours of sleep at night anyways, so it makes sense that they’ll make up the rest somewhere else.

I hadn’t thought of it like that, you’re definitely right, a lot of people do take little cat naps when they want to stay up late.

I tried polyphasic sleep twice , after reading Steve Pavlinas successful attempts, and went all out but had the hardest time staying up with nothing to do with a sleep deprived brain at 3:30am. It was weird, but I really need more time in the day so I might try this biphasic thing out.

    Last night I followed a more disciplined Biphasic schedule as follows;

    6-7:30 1st Sleep Cycle
7:30-1:30 Errands, going out (solo, an interesting yet rewarding exercise), etc
    1:30-6:00AM 2nd Sleep Cycle

In all this constitutes 6 hours of sleep for the night, or 4 ‘cycles’ (’cycles’ here just referring to a 90 minute sleep increment).

My results? This morning I feel fine. At least as awake as I do on normal days, and once again, last night I was wide awake and very alert while socializing.

Another note; I came home around 12:30 and spent the remainder of the evening having some drinks and perusing the net. Normally, having drinks before bed time results in a lot of random wake ups during the night. Not this time. Slept straight through till my alarm went off at 6.

    Biphasic 4-eva.
