Last night I followed a more disciplined Biphasic schedule as follows;

6-7:30 1st Sleep Cycle
7:30-1:30 Errands, going out (solo, an interesting yet rewarding exercise), etc
1:30-6:00AM 2nd Sleep Cycle

In all this constitutes 6 hours of sleep for the night, or 4 'cycles' ('cycles' here just referring to a 90 minute sleep increment).

My results? This morning I feel fine. At least as awake as I do on normal days, and once again, last night I was wide awake and very alert while socializing.

Another note; I came home around 12:30 and spent the remainder of the evening having some drinks and perusing the net. Normally, having drinks before bed time results in a lot of random wake ups during the night. Not this time. Slept straight through till my alarm went off at 6.

It was weird, but I really need more time in the day so I might try this biphasic thing out.

I hadn't thought of it like that, you're definitely right, a lot of people do take little cat naps when they want to stay up late.

I feel like a lot of people are already doing this and perhaps just don't know the technical name for it. A lot of people will usuall take a nap when they get home from work or school (at least I do) and then stay up later in the night to do whatever; things like watch TV, play video games, etc. In our case it's going out sarging. I always try to fit in a 90 minute nap if I know I'm going to be out really late. Most people only get about six hours of sleep at night anyways, so it makes sense that they'll make up the rest somewhere else.

Goat; good question. Greg was telling me last night that in the research he's done, it seems Biphasic is not entirely difficult to swap out with 'regular' sleep on the weekends or whatever.

All things considered though, I'll probably try to do this going forward. Even when I'm not out meeting people those extra, quiet hours at home could be very productive. Polyphasic sleep on the other hand, completely screws up your body and I have no desire to try it.

hmm, so are you planning to make this your permenant new sleep cycle setup, or was this more of an experiment/every once in a while change of pace?

I'm wondering how well people do going back and forth between sleep styles on a regular basis, seems like a bad idea, great way to confuse you body

FYI, the polyphasic link in the post is actually about biphasic sleeping. A guys has been sleeping 3 hours at night and 90 minutes in the evening for years now with no adverse effects.

Polyphasic sleeping is hard hard hard to do, but biphasic is in the realm of possibility. Remember it's about sleep cycles, increments of around 90 minutes.

Cash, you might modify your schedule to sleep a total of 6 or 7.5 hours and see if you notice any differences. Also, put more time between when you wake up from your nap and when you go back to bed for "core sleep." I think Glen Rhodes takes a 90 minute nap around 5-6PM, and then gets 3 hours of core sleep from 3-6AM.
