best gadgets for writers

Writing everyday can be a challenging task, just from a motivation standpoint.

Add to that the monotany of being chained to a desktop PC, and it can easily become an exercise in frustration.

To counter this, we of the UM tribe will sometimes schedule outings to various wi-fi enabled cafes and bars with the sole purpose of working in a fresh environment.

Still, I for one could unshackle myself even further by getting some tools which would allow me to work whenever the mood strikes.

Wired blog to the rescue then, with an essential list of must-have gadgets for writers.

Two of my favorites:

1.  A digital recorder, for capturing interviews and stream of consciousness ideas to be transcribed later.

2.  Unlimited public transport access

Exploration is about the most useful activity a writer can indulge in. For city-dwellers, to whom cars are impractical and cycles sheer suicide, forking out for an unlimited pass on public transport—and using it—is an expensive alternative.

It will find you wandering into every inspiration and lesson the town has to offer, and offer plenty of time to tap out your experiences while someone else worries about the traffic.

I can definitely vouch for the mind altering experience of taking the Route 15 bus up Colfax on a Friday night.

Crazy drunken gay guys in American flag short-shorts trying to share their brown bagged Nattie Light and ‘worldy wisdom’?  Inspiration: I smell you loud and clear.

[...] One of the first questions my parents asked me when I told them of my plans to go car free was this: “How are you gonna go on dates?”. Easy. Make her drive (if driving is even necessary, see my point above about the perks of living in an urban area). Another benefit is the crazy, and I do mean CRAZY cast of characters I come into contact with. This is especially true of the bus (see my point here) but even the light rail has its moments in this regard. Finally; from a socializing perspective, I’ve had many opportunities to interact with lovely young ladies; some professional corporate types, some bright eyed students. All a wonderful alternative to a solo drive into the office. [...]
