Bachelor Pad: Metal Desk Chair
February 13, 2008 by Greg

I’m currently sitting in Baton Rouge in an almost sterile animal hospital apartment. While it’s nothing shy of an awesome experience to be literally living in a zoo, it’s not quite the place to talk about the compelling interiors. So, I’m going to take this time to answer a question from Cash.
The other day while drinking through some not-so-great domestic organic wines he asked me what kind of chair he should get for his computer desk. He wanted something metal, small and light weight, and around a few hundred.

I immediately thought of the Emeco navy chairs made of welded aluminum and crafted to be feather light. Their most affordable option, the 1951 Chair, adds a more comfortable molded plastic seat and back for the chair.

Next, in a very similar vein, is Stua’s Gas Side Chair. This offering utilizes an aluminum base with polypropylene seat and back. A bit smoother with more feminine lines and curves, this chair comes in at about $90 more than the 1951 Chair.

Lastly, the CB2 Surf Chair, while not the same quality as the above, has a budget office chair option that looks at home with these other two. I’m particularly attracted to the waterfall edge on the chair, making longer periods in the chair easier on the legs.
Oh, and if you ditch the budget, you can get the $1200 leather and aluminum Eames pictured at the top.

Holy krap dood, this is awesome. I’d say that 1951 Chair is exactly what I was picturing.. now to squirrel away the $280!
For the past 4+ years at the past couple of jobs we’ve had Herman Miller’s Aeron chairs. def not cheap chairs but i have to say i no longer have any back problems like i used to. damn fine chair, but happy work paid for it not me.
Ditch the budget!! That Eames is gorgeous!! Of course, that doesn’t ALWAYS mean comfy, but none of the above look that comfortable to me. I would always have to try before I buy, and I’m more ‘girly’, so these styles wouldn’t really be for me anyway. Still…the Eames, and its accessories looks stunning. BTW, goat’s right about the Aeron chairs. Especially for work or anyplace where you have to sit for long stretches of time.
I meant none of the above EXCEPT the Eames chair look that comfy!!
I love this, from CB2’s description of the Surf Chair:
“Endowed derriere and wide square back waterfall to take the hard edges off shoulders and knees”
Hmm. “Bootylicious?” - out. “Endowed derriere” - in.
