Bachelor Pad: Kitchens and Bathrooms
January 23, 2008 by Greg

So far in the Bachelor Pad cleaning series we’ve covered dirty floors and dusty surfaces. The last big things we have left are usually the most neglected areas of a man’s home, the kitchen and the bathroom. Trust me, I’ve been in your bathroom. It’s disgusting. And I’m not the only one who thinks so.
Luckily, these two are the easiest to clean. If the floors were cleaned while mopping and vacuuming the rest of the house, the job is already halfway done. The only thing you have left are the specifics to that room.
Most people already know how to clean their kitchens and bathrooms, it’s just a matter of getting around to it that seems to be the issue. We’ve taken each room and isolated a few simple focal points to help get them clean.
The Kitchen
- Cook Top
- Sink
- Appliances
- Surfaces and Counters
Cleaning the cooktop is going to depend on the style of the range. If you have a gas, an electric range, or a glass cooktop, cleaning methods will all vary. Regardless of style, the tops should be scraped, the pans should be scrubbed, and the back splash should be cleaned on a regular basis.
The sink requires only a simple scrubbing of the basin and the hardware. Appliances need be run over with a sponge/clothe to remove and spills or cooking residue. Lastly the surfaces of your major appliances, cabinets, counters, and counters usually need only a quick wipe down.
The Bathroom
- Vanity
- Shower/Bath
- Toilet
Cleaning the bathroom is straight forward. For the vanity, scrub down the sink and hardware, clean the mirror, and wipe down the counter surface. The shower/bath is going to require a little more work and probably a little scrubbing. The toilet, if maintained regularly, is going to be a simple wipe down with a disinfectant cleaner.
Rotation
Everyone knows how to clean, but the hard part is keeping up the maintenance. To keep up appearances, try alternating weeks. One week clean the kitchen and the next clean the bathroom. While this isn’t the most tidy of schedules, it’ll keep the place looking a lot better than it currently does.

My suggestion? Move and start fresh in a new place.
