Tv on the iPhone

September 9, 2008 by Greg · 4 Comments

Since I’ve been spending my days in bed resting, I’ve been downloading tv shows and watching them on my phone.  This rocks.  Now if I could only find them somewhere for free…

Daniel Radcliffe is Cool

I don’t know where all these videos are from, but they kill me.  Daniel Radcliffe is way cooler than I previously thought.

Living Financially Independent

September 4, 2008 by Greg · 2 Comments

If I didn’t have to work to pay my bills, I would spend my days:

  • Traveling
  • DJ’ing and Making Music
  • Dancing
  • Writing
  • Creating Applications (web or otherwise)

How would you spend your time if money wasn’t a concern?

Introductions

Imaginative America (Blair Humphreys) you should know Denver Infill (Ken Schroeppe).  While I don’t personally know either of you, I think the two of you have very similar goals for the downtown growth in your respective cities.  Let me know how it works out.

P.S.  Readers should check out the above sites for all things urban planning.

Oklahoma City Airport Review

September 2, 2008 by Greg · 3 Comments

The Oklahoma City Airport (OKC), or technically the Will Rogers World Airport, is way nicer than I expected. While the almost 4 million yearly passengers fall way behind Denver’s 50 million, the design would fool the common passenger otherwise. The large open areas of brushed metal and exposed stone give this western airport a metropolitan feel. Continual renovation is underway with phase II completed just two years ago, and phase III (a parking modification) currently in design. Echoing much of the city’s focus on development, the airport is achieving its goal as a welcome beacon to the highly desired visitors.

House of Commons

August 29, 2008 by Greg · 1 Comment

With all the media awareness on the American democracy system this week, I thought it ample time to post this video from the British House of Commons.  While I’m not entirely sure how British laws work, I do think it’s highly entertaining.  If the House of Representatives sounded like this, I might tune into CSPAN once in a while.

Thanks to Sean for sharing this.

You know what I love? Twitter

August 28, 2008 by Greg · 9 Comments

I was late to hop on this bandwagon, and have opted to use my account mainly for professional networking, but damn, I love this thing.

How I use it:

  • Updating My Current Location (Not starbucks, but different cities)
  • Looking for services
  • Looking for discounts
  • Requesting information
  • Publishing quick snippets/links I find useful (mostly technical)

Are you twittering?

Things I Didn’t Know Exisited Until Today: Intentional Community

August 28, 2008 by Greg · 6 Comments

An intentional community is a planned residential community designed to have a much higher degree of teamwork than other communities. The members of an intentional community typically hold a common social, political or spiritual vision and are often part of the alternative society. They also share responsibilities and resources. Intentional communities include cohousing communities, residential land trusts, ecovillages, communes, kibbutzim, ashrams and housing cooperatives.

Drinking from Growlers

August 27, 2008 by Greg · 6 Comments

Lately my beverage of choice has switched to the locally available microbrews.  One idea I’ve been contemplating though is switching to growlers.  The points currently swaying me are:

  • Cheaper Price
  • Enviromentally Friendly (reusing the bottle)
  • Supportive of local business

Anyone buying growlers on a regular basis?

Any recommendations for the Denver area?  (I called Vine Street Pub, the latest Mountain Sun location in Denver, but they aren’t brewing on site till next year.)

Relationship Review Point

August 26, 2008 by Greg · 5 Comments

While visiting friends recently, they shared with me a dating pattern their roommate uses.  She schedules regular reviews with scientific rigidity to evaluate the relationship.  If she approaches a hard spot but it’s not a review point, she doesn’t prematurely end the partnership. Instead she chooses to work through the problems till the next review checkpoint.

Any thoughts on this?  Does it sound like a logical way to keep a relationship strong or an overly methodic approach to dating?

Kindle or Sony Reader

Anyone have an ebook reader of some sort?

I’ve currently abandoned the notion of working on the metro rail, so I’ve been wondering if an ebook reader would be a productive tool.  Not only for reading books, but news and blogs as well with the added ability to save snippets for things like Urban Monarch.

Pre-DNC Downtown Denver Buzz

August 25, 2008 by Greg · 1 Comment

It’s easy to tell something is stirring in the mile high city.  Last night, arriving late from a 10 day series of jaunts around the country, I found myself sitting across from an unlikely pair.  A 50-something gray haired from Washington D.C. and a 20-something metro from Los Angeles had met on the bus and were sharing their confusion over just where they were on their respective free-of-charge maps.  Realizing their struggle, I helped point out where we were, and what directions they would continue once we reached the center of the city.

Entering the city, I had 25 minutes before the next bus into Capitol Hill and decided to use this opportunity to walk around my city and see what was happening.  Sunday Night, 10p, the streets were unusually occupied with our visiting patriots investigating the night life.  The 16th Street Mall bustled with men in suits, ladies in dresses, and occasionally a full bar patio.  As I lazily strolled along I noticed another resident pointing a pair of confused travelers to their destinations.

Apparently I am not alone in the willingness to offer our confused guests a point in the right direction. Poop throwing aside, Denverites are welcoming the DNC.

Foraging in the Airport

August 21, 2008 by Greg · 3 Comments

I eat a minimum of 5 times per day.  Every few hours I’m picking some kind of vegetarian health food into palatable bites.  When I find myself in my usual haunt, the airport terminal, I spend a bit of time cruising the gates looking for some kind of dining option.  Rarely though do I find something to satiate myself.

What I don’t understand is how the quality of food drops as it passes through the airport security.  Is the TSA actively filtering tasty and delicious ingredients?  Are the skilled hands that man my city’s Tokyo Joes and Chipotles denied entry to the concourse?

DNC Coverage

August 20, 2008 by Greg · 5 Comments

Here at Urban Monarch we have the unique privilege of living in the mile high city of Denver, host to the 2008 Democratic National Convention.  I’ve had a few friends who’ve asked if we’ll be covering any DNC events.

Honestly, it hadn’t even occurred to me.   What do you think?  Should Cash and I to go crash some DNC parties?

Vital Ital - Vegetarian African / Jamaican Food

August 19, 2008 by Greg · 1 Comment

This past weekend I had the pleasure of grabbing a quick lunch at Berkeley’s Vital Ital.  This ultra-compact vegetarian joint’s main attraction is its burger like sandwiches.  From bases such as tofu burgers to soya filets, the crux of it all is in the sauces.  I enjoyed a bliss burger topped with a mild cajun, while my dining partner feasted on a filet doused in the flavorful jerk option.  Highly recommended if you find yourself in the East Bay.

Respect is shown for the tradition by learning as much as possible about it.  After a level of understanding is reached, share that knowledge with others on the same journey.

One Thing I Love: VTA

The Santa Clara transit authority running the buses and light rails through silicon valley rocks.  My favorite thing? Purchase a $5 unlimited day pass when you enter a bus.  This came in real handy as I didn’t have anything smaller than a $5 getting on the bus this morning.
