Ask um: Where to Put Cologne

Dear UM,
I see a lot of women putting perfume on their wrists and neck. Are we supposed to do the same or is there somewhere else a man should put cologne?
- Neil
Hi Neil,
This is an often debated topic in which you will hear a lot of answers for. The general answer is you want to put your fragrance on areas of your body that are pulse points. These include areas like the wrists, chest, and neck.
I once received the advice of placing cologne on my forearms to avoid the scent being trapped and manipulated by bracelets and watches. The other place was on the back of the neck to avoid placing the alcohol rich cologne on a freshly shaven neck.
Recently at a fragrance event, one of the fragrance representatives gave me a couple new tips. The first was to put cologne on the back of your upper arm, or tricep. She said this would make the cologne last all day. Her second tip was to apply the fragrance to your hair. By applying the fragrance to the hair instead of the skin, you avoid having the fragrance changed by your body chemistry.
I say experiment. Find what works for you and use that. Spread it around the body but don’t use too much. If you need further inspiration check out these resources:

Well I don’t know if this works for guys but for a girl, placing a dab behind the earlobes right on your neck is a good spot. Then when a person hugs you they get the scent right away. It’s a nice…I like.
Good idear Jilian, as usual.
The one thing I’ll add to Greg’s post is this; according to the lady @ the fragrance event, spritzing a bit of cologne on your hair while it’s *still wet* is the best way to get a long lasting scent.
Something about the way the fragrence binds to protein molecules or some other scientific hocus pocus like that.
Spritzing into your hair does work, but if you do it too often it can dry out your hair and ruin it. There are products out there that are meant to be put in your hair for fragrance. But since cologne is alcohol, it sucks the moisture out of your hair. If you do want to do it, then either go Cash’s route or else lightly spray on your hairs (lightly!) and run it over your hair.
woah, good advice.
