As Seen on TV
30Aug06

Want to know who made that hooded jacket Tom Cruise was wearing in War of the Worlds or what book that cutie in Entourage was reading? SeenOn is here to help. When a website user, or spotter, sees a product on tv, in a film, or on a celebrity, they post it to the website. If another spotter saw it too, they confirm it. If the spot gets enough confirmations, then it goes to the front page. Whether you want credit for identifying your favorite products or are researching something you saw on tv, SeenOn is the resource to use for whats hip on screen.

I think this site will become even more interesting and culturally significant as DVR’s proliferate.
Once ‘traditional’ advertising is replaced almost entirely with product placement, monitoring these occurances will probably prove a lucrative activity for someone smart enough to capitalize on it.
In the meantime though, still pretty kewl.
Good call Cash. Actually SeenOn is product of Delivery Agent, who provides networks the ability to shop products from their shows. Guess what else they’re working on? DVR integration.
I can’t believe Cisco IP phones do not show up in the search on that site… they have been featured in countless TV shows and movies. Specifically West Wing, Entourage, 24, Ocean’s 11 and many many many more. They have a lock on the “cool looking phone” market for TV shows and movies.
Comcast reintroduced on-screen clickable ads to their digital cable guide in my area today. I already sent a complaint via their website. Those fuckfaces. I was so happy when they got rid of that shit and now its back.
The other thing I wanted to point out is there is a growing market for dynamic ad placement in video games. I wonder how long until specific products are featured in a new 360 game and then through Xbox Live you can purchase the item and have it shipped to your house. Maybe you are playing Tiger Woods golf and decide you need a real set of Nike irons. Crazy.
What will be even more whacked out is when Google writes some kind of “federated advertising information sharing protocol” and they start sending your interests (which they have calculated based on searches) to the companies dynamically placing the ads in your TV shows, video games, cell phone, etc…
Sorry for the crazy tangent comment….
Unbelieveable, and yet you know it’s coming.
It reminds me of the scene with Tom Cruise in Minority Report where that hologram pops up asking how he’s enjoying the Gap jeans he just brought.
I really liked Minority Report and the futuristic ideas it had. Are there any plans to make a sequel?
If you ever get a chance to, listen to the old audio recording of the original War of the Worlds. It’s pretty good, and people throught it was really happening when they heard it on the radio.
