acai: superfood for your health

I remember my first experience with Acai.  After researching natural energy boosters, I came across a story talking about a new juice Hollywood celebrities were obsessed with:  Acai.  After tracking it down at a local Whole Foods store, I took my first sip.

It was… weird.

The consistency was very thick, almost fruit smoothie like; the flavor was completely unique.  And completely delicious.  It had a strange hint of chocolate beneath a rich, berry taste.  It was also purple, which didn’t hurt.

I noticed about a half hour later, that I did indeed feel more focused and awake.  The Acai had done it’s job, from my perspective.  Apparently, it was doing a lot more than that.

It’s got more antioxidants than blueberries, red wine or pomegranates. It’s rich in omega fatty acids, fiber and vitamins. It packs a delectable berry-cocoa flavor — think red wine with a strong infusion of chocolate.

It’s also been a longtime favorite for Brazilian martial artists:

It’s been an Amazon regional food for thousands of years. But in the ’90s, it was the iujitsu guys who started training with it and turned it into something cool and hip and something that the local juice bars wanted to sell on the beach in Rio.”

Acai is quickly spreading into other products too:

Others have jumped on the acai bandwagon. Naked Juice, owned by PepsiCo, sells an acai-based drink called Purple Machine, while Bossa Nova markets a line of acai juice, flavored with mango, agave, cranberries and other fruits. In October, Anheuser Busch introduced 180 Blue, an acai energy drink. Proctor & Gamble incorporated acai into one of its shampoos, while Haagen Dazs features Brazilian Acai Berry Sorbet.

The juice isn’t cheap, averaging $2.99 a bottle here in Denver.  Considering its health benefits though, I think it’s worth every penny.

I stumbled across Purple Machine, and I have to say that it’s my favorite of the ‘health slushees’. I definitely feel great after drinking it, and it’s a way to make sure you’re getting some fiber when your life is too hectic to have a real meal.

I believe Jamba has an acai drink too.
