beta nightclub denver review - insane potential
May 21, 2008 by Cash · 3 Comments

Beta nightclub, recently opened by the owners of Beatport records is probably the best club in the country right now, if not the world.
The biggest? Hell no. The most exclusive? Not even close. The best.
If they can work through some issues with ticketed events, Beta will put Denver on the map worldwide as an epicenter of dance and DJ culture.
If they can’t? Well, we’ll have a repeat performance or two of last Thursday night, and then people will go elsewhere.
Skullcandy Smokin Buds Arrived

roku netflix player: the future of home entertainment

I’ve long believed traditional ‘broadcast’ mediums will eventually go the way of the paper newspaper (which is dying a slow, painful death as we speak). There is simply no better conduit for every type of information than the broadband / dsl connection, and that will only be magnified when direct-to-home-fiber becomes more prevalent.
Bravo then to Roku, longtime producer of super-sexy, incredibily reliable wireless digital audio solutions. They’ve partnered with Netflix to unchain the awesome “Watch It Instantly” service and bring it where it belongs: to your TV
Pretending To Be Cash

It has become clear to me that I have been using a running inside joke without letting the rest of you readers in on it. I have complete permissions on this site to do whatever I want. I can change posts, update settings, and, if I need to, change the author’s name. When Cash is late on a scheduled post, or I’m just feeling a little mischievous, I write a mock post posing as him.
Here are a few of my finer pieces.
i heart chuck palahniuk

Ah Chuck Palahniuk. How does UM love thee? Let us count the ways. Better yet, let’s give three quick examples from a recent MTV article about the filming of Choke (cue Cash’s eyes rolling back in his head @ the thought of this movie):
Productivity: Putting in Time

It has become clear to me that success is a factor of three things: choosing the right focus, getting lucky with that choice, and putting in the time to make it happen. The crux of this matter is the follow through of the third step. The decision making and luck are both quick and fun parts, but putting in time is hard work.
The greatest thing I’ve found about putting time in is that if it happens regularly, it is hard not to succeed. From playing the piano to learning the latest technology, all that really needs to happen is to allow focused time for these activities. To ensure that the time does get put in, I’ve come up with a few devices to make it happen. Read more
reader input: downtown living pros and cons
May 19, 2008 by Cash · 8 Comments
If anyone asked me ten years ago what the downside of living downtown would be, I would have stared blankly until they felt stupid for posing such a ludicrous question. Since my teenage years I’ve been dreaming of a day when I’d find myself surrounded by skyscrapers.
Well now that 7 years have passed since my urban migration, I can recognize both the good and the bad:
nine inch nails - the slip review
May 16, 2008 by Cash · 2 Comments

There once was an album from Nantucket.
It took everything you knew about NIN and said “____ it”.
That album was “Wish”. The hardcore, distorted guitar madness was such a departure from the electro-brilliance of Pretty Hate Machine that I called for a boycott. Then, The Downward Spiral was released.
I breathed a sigh of relief. Trent Reznor had found the perfect balance between guitars and synths.
“The Slip” is a return to Downward form, and it’s NIN’s best effort since.
Jessica Alba Staring Content
What the hell is this? Why is Jessica Alba staring at her webcam? Who gave celebrities access to YouTube again? I don’t care. It’s like she’s looking at me.

No doubt from the creative genius behind boytaurs, comes Man Babies. A blog strangely dedicated to swapping the heads of infants and adults. In a word, wow. In another word, why. In three words, check this out.

reader input: un-outsource-able?
May 15, 2008 by Cash · 10 Comments
I was reading an article the other day talking about “Life after the IT department”.
It was discussing ways of transferring your ’soft skills’ to industries that couldn’t be impacted by outsourcing. Two ideas cited were construction and becoming a chef.
The thinking was, these ‘hands on’ jobs could not be handled remotely.
You might think things like medicine would fall under the same umbrella, but how long until Dr. Sunit Patel is directing the actions of a robotic surgeon in a Baltimore hospital via high-speed internet connection from Mumbai?
I’d say 5 years or less.
The same goes for pharmacists. I have two friends who are married to pharmacists, and I can remember mentioning what I invision as a ‘prescription vending machine’ which would basically verify your identity (probably via bio-metrics), authenticate your prescription via the internet, and then dispense the correct meds with no human interaction required.
With shock and horror they responded “But people need people at the pharmacy! They’re always asking questions”. Really? I for one have never, ever asked a question of a pharmacist. I get my drug related questions taken care of with my doctor.
The bottom line is the entire world seems headed for strange, remotely worked, off-shored destinations.
My question to you esteemed UM readers: What’s impervious to the outsource?
Comment away. I’m more than a little anxious to hear your thoughts.

Tony Chachere and Crystal
May 14, 2008 by Greg · 3 Comments

Recently my New Orleans operative came to Denver to bring me a few prized gifts from cajun country: Crystal’s Hot Sauce and Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning. Why does everything in New Orleans have someone’s name attached to it? I don’t know, but Crystal’s is a delicious and cheaper alternative to famed Tobasco brand products and Mr. Tony Chachere is like a cajun Lawry’s seasoning salt. If you see some, buy it, and put it on, well, everything!

the strangers movie trailer / preview = hella freaky
May 13, 2008 by Cash · 4 Comments
I’m no newbie to horror flicks and tend to take them with a grain of salt; giving me pure, faux-terrified enjoyment in the theatre.
I’ll warn everyone then that the new trailer for “The Strangers” is one of the most unsettling things I’ve ever watched.
Smokin Buds En Route

We aren’t too proud to beg over here at Urban Monarch and now Skullcandy’s smokin buds headphones are en route. We’re excited to give these reader recommended headphones a spin around the Denver mass transit system.
poll: the dark knight vs. indiana jones

Saturday afternoon we went to see Iron Man. Although the movie itself was great, seeing the Dark Knight trailer on the big screen was even more exciting.
I’m pretty stoked for both Indiana Jones and Batman, but I have to say The Dark Knight is at the top of my list this summer.
How about you?
