geek o lanterns

31Oct07
by Cash

Wired serves up a slide show of 10 great, incredibly geeky jack-o-lanterns.
Happy Halloween everyone.

Almost every room in my apartment is in need of better lighting.  Looking to outfit my bedroom with a pair of bed side lamps there is one light sticking out, the Artemide’s Tolomeo wall spot.
The original Tolomeo lamp started it’s life as a desk lamp and went on to win a Compasso d’Oro award, a […]

israel oks ecstasy use

31Oct07
by Cash

In a move that can only be called “sensible” Israeli officials recently announced they will stop prosecuting first time drug offenders caught with a ‘personal use’ quantity of any narcotic.

Under the scheme, users will escape prosecution the first time they’re busted with up to 0.3 grams of heroin or cocaine, 3 ecstasy pills, 2 grams […]

Looks like Saul Williams is following suit with Radiohead’s new music model.  A new collaboration produced by Trent Reznor is available with a binary name your own price tag.  You can pay $5, or you can pay $0, it’s your choice.
My Dearest Friends and Fans,
It is my greatest honor to present to you The Inevitable […]

daft punk alive

30Oct07
by Cash

Currently heralded as the best live act in the world (an absolute understatement in my opinion), Daft Punk is set to release an album of their triumphant homecoming show in Paris earlier this year.  The website promoting it not only offers some samples of the music but also features an excellent video montage giving a […]

I’ve always found the organic food industry to be a justifiably debatable topic. With no studies to prove it’s effectiveness, organic foods have always been subject of scrutiny against price conscious shoppers. However, a recent four year study has been completed that finds organic food to be more nutritious than it’s conventionally grown […]

Having just returned from a mind blowing weekend in Las Vegas (for the Vegoose music festival) I find myself emptying my bags and sorting through receipts.  One thing I wish wasn’t staring back at me from the pile?  An unredeemed $67.00 credit voucher from playing video Blackjack at the Luxor.  Playing video blackjack while getting […]

Sub Rosa Terragon

29Oct07
by Greg

Being an avid vodka infuser as well as fan of all things delicious, this new vodka from sub rosa is peaking my interest.  Their unique infusion of tarragon makes me want to through all of my other dried herbs into glasses of vodka and taste the results.
Slashfood’s description makes me want to put a case […]

According to a new study, 87% of men and women aspire towards being in a monogomous relationship (defined as “being in a relationship with one person at a time”).  Communication was cited as the most important factor in maintaining one.
Although the source on this is a press release from a diamond company, I’d still say it rings true.   […]

After hundreds of nights spent in nightclubs over the last ten years there’s one important lesson I’ve learned:  DJs arn’t jukeboxes.  You can keep your requests to yourself.  On the other hand, asking what song a DJ is playing, or complimenting his current selection is usually welcomed (as UM reader and Chicago area DJ Lincoln […]

Optimus Prime Calls

26Oct07
by Greg

Last weekend I was wakened by a phone call from Optimus Prime.  Then he called back to repeat his message of warning.  I then realized I must immediately get up and issue the head autobot to make calls for me as well.  To make calls yourself, visit the dvd release page for the Transformers Movie.

Last night Greg, an assorted 6 pack of micro-brews, and I ventured out to see Tim Burton’s Halloween classic “Nightmare Before Christmas”, recently re-released in stunning Disney Digital 3D.  It’s in a limited run right now and highly recommended.
Go here to find out more and locate a theatre playing it near you

Insuring My Things

25Oct07
by Greg

I’m just a few days and counting till an overnight flight takes me to South America.  I’ve had one task lingering over my head for a while, and with me being absent for 3 weeks, it’s come up on the priority list.  Fearing that I will return to an apartment filled with water rotting my […]

the hedonist’s guide

25Oct07
by Cash

I make no excuses for my hedonist bent.  I’ve always said I’d rather live a, ahem, ‘flavorful’ life and die at 50 then avoid pleasure at all costs and live to 100.  Vice is nice.
That said, a recent book titled “The Hedonist’s Guide” is next on my reading list.  The writing (by a variety of […]

One Thing I Love: Etsy

25Oct07
by Greg

When I first moved into my new apartment, I had planned on decorating my walls with art I found in the local galleries around town. After a few schedule conflicts prevented me from attending any of the immediate first friday art walks, my walls started begging me to cover them. I entertained the […]

funny cultural faux pas’

24Oct07
by Cash

When retired UM correspondent Glenn returned from a lengthy sojourn in China last year, perhaps no story struck me as more hilarious (and disgusting) than his description of the supermarkets there.  Or more specifically, the locals’ tradition of spitting all over the floor of said supermarket.
Though our own Western sensibilities can be shocked by such […]

Seriously?
Ever buy seasonings in those packets (not that I am particularly endorsing that behavior as they are often full of chemicals) from the grocery store but struggle with how best to store them? Then this tip from the Unclutterer might be up your alley. Get yourself one of those plastic 3×5 (or 4×6 for the […]

pimp quotes

24Oct07
by Cash

Once again, being on the trail of a Halloween costume has turned up comic gold.  This time, at a pimp costumes site.  The costumes are pricy, but the quotes are real, ahem, nicey.
Keep your pimp hand strong and your girls working long.”

I Have Nightmares

23Oct07
by Greg

I have been laughing about this photo comic all weekend.  Time to share.
I have nightmares
where I’m a fag
I do all this gay shit
and I wake up feeling
lonely.
A Softer World

I’ve been going crazy trying to figure out a suitable costume to wear for some upcoming, out of state Halloween festivities (Vegoose.. here we come).  Since my travelling companions will be dressed to kill as Hunter S. Thompson and Betty Boop respectively, I need something cool.

MAKE Blog has some absolutely awesome ideas not only for […]
