4 hour work week book review / overview: part 1 of 4
June 11, 2007 by Cash · 13 Comments

Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.
-Oscar Wilde, Irish dramatist and novelist
Timothy Ferriss chose this quote, a favorite of mine for years, to open his latest book “The 4 Hour Work Week”. It’s a great overview of every concept contained within. This book is not for everyone. In fact, it’s not for most people. Most people are happy settling for the mediocre lifestyle they’ve settled into, 9-5 cubicle cage included.
For anyone who’s dreamed of escaping, The 4 Hour Work Week is a map of the way out.
Urban Monarch Book Club
June 11, 2007 by Greg · 15 Comments

One of the core philosophies of Urban Monarch is to provide usable news and information. In traditional media it is common to flip through pages of movie, music, and book reviews. I’ll see half a dozen items that peak my interest, but the reality is that I rarely consume any of it. I just have a list of books in my head that I’ve “heard something about.”
We are going to change that with the Urban Monarch Book Club. Read more
more independent music stores closing
I’ve long been a fan of iTunes’ music store. The convenience, selection and price make it hard to resist. Now that I can get most of my tracks DRM free, there’s even more to love. Still, there was something magical about spending lazy Sunday afternoons at my favorite local indie haunt, Twist & Shout. Relaxing on the back couches, sampling CD’s and trying to make eye contact with the cute new wave girl in the black and white dress across the room, it was an experience.
Apparently, an experience whose days are numbered.
The consumer shift towards downloads, compounded by long hours for store owners and declining interest in compact discs, has killed off a few more of the nation’s best indie music shops, this time in Los Angeles.
i love amy
June 8, 2007 by Cash · 2 Comments
Human nature rears its ugly head on the internet all the time. Especially when people can speak anonymously. In researching an old internet hoax I came across one young man’s loving ode to “Amy” the object of his (I’m just guessing here) pre-teen affection.
The post itself is comic gold, while the comments it spurned in the guest book are truly heartwarming.

Goatse Olympics
Update: BBC pulled the video from youtube. Here is a working video at college humor.
I am not going to goatse you. If you aren’t hip to what that means, I suggest, from home (ie not at work), that you read this wikipedia entry. However, if you are well acquainted with the imagery, you are going to love that the BBC unknowingly included a goatse olympics logo parody on both their website and broadcast.
pinger group message sender
June 8, 2007 by Cash · 2 Comments

I’ve had plenty of experience with ahem, ‘late night text messaging gone bad’. I’ve literally resorted to removing my phone’s battery occasionally, mid way through a night when I’m worried about my potential 3AM actions.
A service called Pinger might be just what the doctor ordered to keep me out of trouble.
Grocery Shopping for a Week
June 7, 2007 by Greg · 4 Comments

Usually I’m chained to a desk and locked in a cubicle 40 hours a week. This makes morning meals on the go a necessity and ready to eat lunches a must. Now that I’m free from the grind, I’m having trouble with, of all things, feeding myself. I get up, start doing things, an inevitably hunger comes with an unruly demand to be satiated.
This reminds me of the Pavarotti quote.
One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.
touch the girl, get the digits
June 7, 2007 by Cash · 2 Comments

Smoothly escalating physical contact is an important element of socializing. If you haven’t gone near a girl for three hours and then move in for a kiss at the end of the night, it’s gonna be awkward. As Eric Von Markovic wisely says; your first kiss will likely be your last.
According to a recent study, touching someone can also dramatically improve your chances of getting their phone number.
Free Sonic Root Beer Floats
June 7, 2007 by Greg · 6 Comments

I’ve been enjoying workless days with one of my best friends, Zach. He is a bartender, so he has most mornings and afternoons off. We spend the days drinking wine, eating breakfast specials, swimming in the sun, and watching whatever drizzles through the TV. The latter has made me aware of an important event occurring today, free Sonic root beer floats. Read more
quick healthy recipe: egg beaters sandwich

During the day, I try to stay disciplined with my eating. Being an on again, off again devotee of the Body for Life program mandates that I have regularly scheduled ‘feedings’ during my work day that include a serving of protein and a serving of healthy carbs.
The problem?
My typical debauched evenings and subsequent scrambling to get ready for work in the morning don’t allow a lot of prep time for my meals.
Enter the 90 second miracle.
Be Romantic on a Budget

Zen Habit has a new guide out, 50 Ways to Be Romantic on the Cheap. The guide informs that the primary goal isn’t to save money, it’s to keep a relationship fresh on a regular basis. Cash will be exceptionally fond of the recommendations for weekly dates, although I think it’s assuming you are seeing / talking to your partner more than just one day a week. Read more

sleeptracker watch review

When I first heard we’d be getting the Sleeptracker watch for review, I was excited for one reason: biphasic sleep.
Although my own biphasic efforts have been less than perfect (”Alcohol; the cause of and solution to all of life’s problems”) the Sleeptracker watch has proven a powerful tool for my quest.
Status, Class, and Mobility

Slam poets piss me off. I do not mean to imply I have a distaste for poetry. It is really just those few (or many) who obsess over purported racial, sexual, or social oppression. Frankly, because I think it’s bullshit. Especially coming from the mouth of a proven mind with demonstrated command of the English language.
The New York Times takes a more logical approach, putting the numbers in perspective by demonstrating the difference between upper and lower class. The special feature includes an interactive graph to spotlight class differences and highlight mobility between classes. Read more
las vegas call girl conspiracy
I knew a guy who went to Las Vegas several years ago with his girlfriend at the time. On a whim, they decided to try one of the ‘escorts delivered to your door’ advertised via the cards passed out on the strip.
In what was a surprise to absolutely no one, the experiement didn’t go off without a hitch.

poll: best summer cocktail?
June 4, 2007 by Cash · 5 Comments

One of my best memories from last summer was a day spent poolside at the Urban Monarch cabana at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas. As memory serves, we had a handle of Finlandia in our private refridgerator. Thanks to the dilligent efforts of our gorgeous hawaiian waitress (bringing us all manner of fruit juices as mixers) we were all drunk by noon.
I would say my ‘preferred’ summer cocktail however is sangria. Perfect for patios and sunbathing alike.
How about you?
coffeehouses as fashion boutiques
The holy trinity of Italian coffee for me includes Segafredo, Lavazza, and Illy. Thus far, I’ve been blessed with visiting coffee shops by both Lavazza (at Denver International Airport, Concourse A) and Segafredo (in the Forum Shops @ Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas).
Segafredo’s spot is the epitome of stylish; sleek, modern lines bathed in their signature red and black. Lavazza’s is a bit more utilitarian, but still oozes Italian sex appeal. According to the New York Times, Illy has plans to take the notion of ‘coffee shop’ to a new level of haute couture entirely.
The “Facts” of Life from Lazy Boy

I was hesitant to link this video because, well, it’s a lot of bullshit. And Josh creeps me out a little. However, you avid socializers out there will probably benefit from tidbits like “Elvis was originally blonde” and “The average age of first intercourse is 15.3 years.” Read more
